Meet Dawn Stary of Journey Pastoral Counseling Center

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dawn Stary.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Dawn. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have been working as a pastoral counselor for the past 12 years. I have mostly worked with refugees and asylum seekers but I have long had the desire to create a center for all members of society, regardless of background, income or creed. In December I was given the opportunity to become the interim director of a counseling center that center has since dissolved but together with fellow pastoral counselors and spiritual directors we were able to begin Journey Pastoral Counseling Center. In this space, we will offer individual, couples and family counseling as well as individual spiritual direction.

However, recognizing the need to create an intentional community where people can gather to find affirmation and to share without judgment we will begin to offer groups at our north county location and will soon be offering groups at the Central San Diego location as well.

Has it been a smooth road?
Starting a new organization is filled with bumps and twists and turns. I have been grateful for all of the support I have received from the other counselors but from mentors and colleagues as well. Our greatest struggle has been time. I am working and am a mother of a little one so I have to be intentional about making time for the counseling center. Slowly but surely we have made a lot of progress in the past six months.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We specialize in offering spiritually-integrated mental health that is holistic and that take into account the person’s many dimensions. We recognize that humans are multi-dimensional, we rely on our intellect and we are also creatures with emotions and a spirituality that is grounded in our very being. Spirituality manifests differently in the lives of different people.

At Journey Pastoral Counseling Center we accept and affirm all people seeking our services. Regardless of income, creed or any other aspects of the person’s background, they are welcome to participate in our services. All of our counselors are professionally trained with a background in their own personal spiritual reflection.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
San Diego is a good place to start a pastoral counseling center because there is a long history of pastoral counseling in the city. We are connected with different denominations as well as with the mindfulness community. There seems to be a desire in San Diego among residents to find opportunities to create real connection with others but to also
