Meet Deborah Zilliox of Kheya Holistic Health Center in Del Mar and Carlsbad

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deborah Zilliox.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am a Nationally Certified and CAMTA Certified Holistic Health Practitioner and BBU Certified Pilates Instructor.

I arrived in California to attend the University of San Diego and graduated with a B.A. in Psychology in 2002.

During that time, I found my area of interest centered on Health Psychology and decided to continue my education focusing on manual and alternative therapies.  Since then, I received my Holistic Health Practitioner certification from the Academy of Health Professions in La Mesa, have been certified in Pregnancy and Postpartum Massage through Kate Jordan Seminars, nationally certified through the NCBTMB and certified through the California Massage Therapy Association.

Much of my early experience was working with clients in Chiropractic offices, sports clinics and hospitals until I opened my own clinic in 2008 which has now grown to two clinics in the Del Mar Village and the Carlsbad Village.  I understand the importance and have seen tremendous results when massage is used to help clients rehabilitate from injury as well as maintain a healthy lifestyle.

I am also a Certified Pilates instructor through Balanced Body University since 2010 and work one on one with clients in Private Sessions.  Much of the focus of the Pilates sessions is around breath work and core strengthening as well as aligning hips, shoulders and working to release areas of tension or pain.

All in all, I LOVE helping people and am so thrilled to be able to work one on one with clients and see tremendous results in their lives.

Has it been a smooth road?
When first starting out as a Massage Therapist, I was trained well in massage modalities but didn’t have a clue about operating my own business. I was struggling to keep my schedule full of clients because I didn’t know how to successfully promote myself or have the knowledge or confidence of how to explain to clients how important it is to receive massages on a regular basis. I was working at many different locations hoping that clients would call and schedule a massage just so I could make enough money to pay my bills and have enough left over to buy groceries.

My life completely changed when I met and hired by business coach Aaron Keith of Ascension Programs.

Because I was struggling financially, it wasn’t easy to commit to his program that added onto my list of bills. Even so, Aaron convinced me that if I trusted in him and did what he coached me to do each week over the following year, that I could not only succeed in operating my own business but that I could make more money than I ever thought possible. My business DOUBLED in that one year and has continued to grow ever since.

One of the biggest leaps of faith I took was opening my first clinic in Del Mar. Actually putting my business on a storefront for all the world to see, committing to a lease, and believing that what I was providing would bring people in the door took courage. Because of my training with Aaron and continued training with a prosperity coach the following year, I had the knowledge of how to set my goals and reach them. I also had my faith that God was guiding me and opening doors to allow my dream of having a health clinic come true. Looking back, it brings a tear to my eye and a sense of true accomplishment to see what has evolved. I am truly grateful for all those who helped me through this journey and especially to God for taking care of me every step of the way.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Kheya Holistic Health Center story. Tell us more about the business.
I am the owner and president of Kheya Incorporated, known as Kheya Holistic Health Center. I focus on Medical Massage Therapy and Private Pilates instruction and also have been certified as a Nutritional consultant. Several independent contractors work out of both of my clinics who have their own specialties in the massage and pilates modalities.

My training as a Medical Massage Therapist allows me to help clients who have conditions that would need a doctor’s referral. These include TMJ, Sciatica, Rotator Cuff injuries, etc.

Medical massage involves Neuromuscular therapy which addresses ischemia (tight tissue with reduced blood flow), myofascial trigger points (hypersensitive points within muscles that give rise to referred phenomena, including pain), neural entrapment and compression, postural assessment and dysfunctional gait patterns with constant consideration for many other factors, such as hydration, nutrition, breathing patterns, and psychological stress. In other words, it’s not just a relaxing massage!

This type of therapy plays well with private Pilates instruction, an exercise system developed by Joseph Pilates in the early part of the 20th century. Pilates focuses on strengthening core muscles while increasing flexibility and improving balance/coordination. It is performed with attention to the breath to keep awareness on what movement is being made, improve the flow of oxygen and improve the capacity of the lungs and focuses on proper form and movement patterns in order to learn how to move better through everyday life. We focus on private Pilates instruction at Kheya in order to pay individual attention to each client and their specific needs.

It makes me proud to provide a place that is a safe haven for people to get away from the hectic world. Clients have continued to return every week or each month for years and years and they step inside the clinic, take a sigh of relief and let their stress go. It’s not just what we do at Kheya that makes it special, it’s the heart behind it that makes the true difference.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I hope that more and more people are able to discover Pilates and how much it can help someone in their everyday life. I also hope that Massage Therapy will continue to grow in the medical world and that more doctors and hospitals will use it as an adjunct therapy to what they already provide.

Deborah provides the most thorough massage I have ever received. As an active person and athlete, I require deep tissue massage and rehabilitative work. I highly recommend Kheya to anyone wanting either therapeutic or a relation massage.
