Meet Denise Gonzalez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Denise Gonzalez.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve always loved hair and makeup since I was little. I started to grow the passion more when my mom enrolled me in modeling classes in 8th grade. That’s when I got my first makeup kit and learned how to apply shadows on myself. This class helped me embrace what I love and confidence. Throughout my high school years, my friends would ask me to do their hair and makeup when there were events at school.

Especially when it came to dance concerts, I was in dance for all 4 years. My senior year I decided to take cosmetology as my elective, I gained so much experience and knowledge when I was there. We did a lot of practice with each other for example by doing each other’s makeup, hairstyles, nails etc. I loved this class so much that I was qualified to receive a scholarship to the California Beauty School Academy. Once I started beauty school I did a lot of volunteer work I would go with some few classmates and go to libraries where we did girls makeup and hair for their prom.

As well as fashion clubs we would go and do their hair and makeup. I love what I do especially when I see my clients face super excited. With my parents love and support they always worked hard to support my siblings and I. We didn’t have much but they worked hard for us to get the things we wanted most of the time. They helped me get to where I am now day by day I’m gaining experience and becoming better at what I enjoy the most.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been smooth I’ve had some days where I wanted to quit and give up when I had negative people telling me things.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I do makeup for every event like proms, quinceañeras, bridal showers etc. As well as editorial for photo shoots and runway makeup. I style, cut and color hair, I love to style the hair the most. I am proud of myself for not giving up and turning the negative into positive and achieve my goals. Helping each client embrace their inner and outer beauty. As well as being their therapist and listening to their stories.

I believe there’s more than just doing their hair and makeup. Encouraging them to stay positive and love themselves, like I had mentioned also being a therapist. A lot of clients appreciate it when you listen to their stories.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes, I would recommend them to start their business to travel around San Diego for events.
