Meet Devin Shea of Shea Family Chiropractic

Today we’d like to introduce you to Devin Shea.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Devin. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Two things took place in my life at a very early age that shaped the purpose of my professional career.

The first is I have incredible parents. My mom was a preschool teacher and my dad, was a cardiologist. They showed me from the very beginning what it was like to work hard in service to others. Because of the man my dad is, deep down ever since I was a kid, I always knew I wanted to be a doctor.

The second thing that took place early on in my life was I became aware the I had very good hand eye coordination and was good at using my body.

Accordingly, in high school, I was the quarterback on the football team, MVP on the basketball team and the San Diego Player of the Year in Volleyball. This allowed me to get a scholarship to play volleyball at UC Irvine where I did my undergraduate work. During this time period all I cared about was winning. Due to this singular focus I racked up a significant amount of injuries. A dislocated shoulder, dislocated finger, searing lower back pain, multiple strains and sprains, I even collapsed my lung a couple of times.

After having three surgeries and a few other trips to the ER, I realized I was incredibly disconnected about my own health.

I would commonly ignore my health problems until I couldn’t any more, then I would medicate them and when the problem returned, which it always did, I would accept them as my new normal.

Luckily everything changed after I began attending chiropractic college.

I learned that there was a better way, that put me in charge of my health and future. I learned that one of the foundations of life and health in my body was my spine and nervous system. I learned that how I ate, how I moved and how I thought affected the way my entire body functions. Based upon this new information I decided to take full responsibility for my own health. And it worked!

I initially thought only about how this could help me, but then it hit me, I could do this for others! This was my epiphany! I could blend what my parents had taught me about working hard in service to others, with my gift of great hand eye coordination and using my body, to become the doctor I always wanted and could teach people to take responsibility of their health, to free them from dependence on medication and wake them up to their potential to live out their purpose. It was in that moment that I dedicated myself entirely to creating a place where adults and children could go and achieve real health results. A place that provides families a supportive environment to raise active, non medicated children. The name of that place is Shea Family Chiropractic. But it was only after investing hundreds of thousands of dollars, traveling around the country to learn from the best and putting together an amazing talented team of providers and support staff that I speak about these things now 10 years later.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My road to entrepreneurship has been difficult. There have been many sleepless nights due to challenging cases, issues with employees and inconsistency in income. I will always remember about five years ago sitting in my closet of my condo on the floor and counting out the coins from a box trying to pay my bills for the month. This was a major low point. On the other hand, I have also experienced being able to build my dream home from scratch and put in a completely custom backyard this year. The best part of being an entrepreneur is having control, being creative daily and growing personally. I would not have it any other way!
