Meet Diana Ocampo of Total Combat Paintball

Today we’d like to introduce you to Diana Ocampo.

Diana, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am a native New Yorker who left to join the military. Joining, I was fortunate enough to have been stationed in beautiful San Diego, needless to say I fell in love with the City. After the military, I had started a few businesses. Between 2006 and 2008 I was fighting cancer, I stepped away from my roles for a year to recover my mind and body. When I came back to take my place with company again, I came back to nothing, everything I worked for was gone and in 2009 lost it all, my home, my business, my car, my dog I mean everything, but grateful to be alive.

I was with my CPA April 2009 and he asked me why I wasn’t my cheerful self, I told him I don’t know what to do, everything is gone, he asked how much did I need, I said $75,000, without asking me what business I was going to open he wrote me a check right there and then. With nothing but hope, I ran and told my 13-year-old what Julio did and told him I was going to open a LaserTag, he said “no mom do paintball,” (I knew NOTHING about Paintball) I said, “How hard can this be”. I opened the paintball filed in September 2009 and have never looked back.

Together, we grew the business from a small outdoor location at the Otay Ranch mall, in Chula Vista to this massive and beautiful 40,000 square foot venue that has evolved into not just a Paintball field, but an Entertainment and Sports Center featuring a variety of activities for the whole family. We feature Vault Parkour (American Ninja Warrior training and fun), Stay Classy CrossFit, I Heart Gaming (Virtual Reality and gaming center) Nerf Wars, Networking events and of course, Total Combat Paintball.

Being Family and Veteran owned, Total Combat strives to provide safe, fun, affordable entertainment for all ages. We also feature many events like our “zombie attack” or upcoming “Couples Therapy” and for Halloween fun- a maze simply called, “The dark” as well as serve as a venue for charitable organizations and private parties.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The struggle was learning everything about Paintball, thankfully I had some experience with guns, lots of them! Being a single mother of two with an infant at the time was also very difficult, I have never complained about being a single mother but I sure had to stay strong. Hopefully, the strength and resilience that I have tried to maintain even through the struggles is something my children can be proud of!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Total Combat Paintball story. Tell us more about the business.
We are known for our conveniently placed location in central San Diego as well as being San Diego’s largest premier indoor paintball facility with many facets. What sets us apart is that we maintain reasonable prices and a family driven customer service. When you visit us, we like to get to know you, our return customers are our favorites-we strive to make everyone a returnee,

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
If having good people around me is luck, then I have the luckiest person around. As far as business goes, I don’t believe in luck. I believe to be successful you have to let it burn in your core and feed that fire constantly day in and day out no matter what, who or how many people want you to fail.
