Today we’d like to introduce you to Diane Mandle.
Diane, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In 1981, I moved to Amherst, MA from Paris, France with my year-old son where I got onto welfare and was able to get a rent subsidy allowing me to finish my education. After working for four years as the Chamber of Commerce director I was recruited to be a regional director for the American Cancer Society in Massachusetts. After 2-1/2 years I was disillusioned and burned out and wanted to do something more directly connected to people.
As a single mom of two boys by then, it was frightening to give up a steady paycheck, but I told my kids to find after school jobs because I was going to try something completely different and couldn’t afford pocket money. I commuted from Amherst MA to Ipswich on weekends for months to study Polarity therapy and also studied to be a life coach. There was barely enough money to pay the mortgage and food for my two fatherless boys as I began my practice. One day I had a booth at a Whole Health Expo and the fellow in the booth next to me had these beautiful bowls. What are they? We chatted and decided to trade sessions since he knew nothing about my modalities. The Tibetan bowl sound healing session completely blew my mind. Throughout I had a vision of a blue Buddha above me, which I later learned was the Medicine Buddha. It was obvious that this was a sign that I needed to learn this modality. I studied with my teacher and after 2/1/2 years was certified through Sacred Sound Workshops. In 2000 it was clear that Amherst, MA was not a place I could succeed at my integrated modality of Tibetan bowls, Polarity and Coaching.
Also, I could not stand the cold east coast weather. California had been calling to me for years because of the weather. So, I gave away all my possessions, packed what I could into a truck and moved here not knowing how I was going to live. I knew it would take me several years to create a successful practice. Back in 2000 sound healing was still relatively unknown. I had so much success with the few clients I did get, that I wanted to educate more people about the modality. I began to offer sound healing concerts and traveled to small yoga studios to do this.
Soon people were asking me to teach them and I created mini- workshops. I created the first multi-media instructional manual in 2004 and in 2008, in response to what I saw as a lack of any standard in the modality, I opened, along with my original teacher, the Tibetan Bowl Sound Healing School. Since that time, I have worked at the San Diego Cancer Center for almost 4 years offering sessions to patients there, created a sound meditation program for Incarcerated veterans, was involved as a sound healing expert in a video project that will be released in the USA and China and in January 28th of 2018 will release my first major book on sound healing at a concert in Balboa Park. On Feb 8th I will perform a one-woman theatrical show based on my memoirs that chronicles my spiritual awakening and shows the journey to this work I do now.
Has it been a smooth road?
It was frightening moving back to the states from Paris with an infant. As a single parent I always struggled to make ends meet and it was awful always having to say “no, we can’t afford it” to my children. There was no-one for me to share my joys and fears with. The fathers of both my boys died when early and it was hard on all of us. When I moved to CA in 2000, the transition was another test of faith, but I knew it would eventually work out. Keeping up with technology has also been a struggle- doing all my own marketing, booking concerts, recruiting of students etc. Keeping up with things on social media etc. takes a lot of time. And is not my favorite thing to do!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Sound Energy Healing story. Tell us more about the business.
Sound Energy Healing and its sister, the Tibetan Bowl Sound Healing School, focuses on Tibetan bowl sound healing. We offer education, training, concerts and private sessions. We have high quality instruments, cd’s, eBooks, and DVD’s available to help people in their personal healing process and for those who wish to learn how to work with the instruments.
I am proud that we integrate both eastern and western energy healing concepts that are accessible to the western mind. We pay close attention to the Buddhist principals that are the foundation of the modality but make that accessible to the western mind.
Sound healing is becoming recognized worldwide as an effective and proven modality that uses vibrational sound to help reduce stress, alter consciousness and create a deep sense of peace, wellbeing and better health. Sound has also been shown to be a vital part of the healing process for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and side effects especially for pain relief management. However, it is still largely unregulated. I see that changing over the next few years as it becomes more widely used in traditional settings such as hospitals, military bases etc.
