Today we’d like to introduce you to Dorothee Conti.
Dorothee, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
About Me: Creating beautiful and healthy living spaces is my passion and my gift. With a background in fashion, staging, and rehabbing countless homes in high-end property management, I realized that home design is where my true interest lies. I combined my knowledge in fashion, professional staging, and design with my Feng Shui expertise to create a customized, whole-home approach to interior design.
I am a treehugger – it’s the truth. As a member of the San Diego Green Building Council, I am an active participant in the green building movement. My expertise in sustainability enables me to reach further in incorporating “green living” practices wherever possible.
How it all started: Growing up in Germany, my architect father and interior decorating wizard of a mother should’ve had their own HGTV show. Our house was a never ending creative zone where my parents remodeled our house over what must have been a ten years span. Walls came down, walls went up. Remodeling, decorating, rearranging. Rinse repeat. But actually, it all started with my grandmother from Czechoslovakia. She was obsessed with rearranging the home and there are anecdotes of my mother’s bruised shins in the search of her bed when she came home after dark. It’s in my blood, I can’t help it. Nothing energizes me more than figuring out the perfect solution for a room composition or finding the perfect accessory to create a look out of a magazine. It’s downright therapy for me. When matters of the world bug me, I go home and organize or restyle my space.
Professionally, I initially thought my calling was in fashion. After attending fashion trade school in Berlin, my life took an unexpected but welcomed turn when I met my then future husband and moved to the US. We bought a house in Austin, Texas and you guessed it, we remodeled it. I earned a degree from UT Austin and I ended up with a 12 years career in real estate management where my favorite task was to furnish model homes and manage rehab projects.
I moved to San Diego in 2014, because I needed a creative change and where better to chase and formulate your dreams than in Southern California?! While still in property management, I took classes in interior design on the weekends as well as became a certified feng shui consultant. I took on small jobs here and there, always longing for more opportunities to live my passion full time.
In 2017, I finally decided it was time to take what I had learned and what I loved to do and turn it into a business to help others. D Conti Living was conceived.
Has it been a smooth road?
My website was a bear to create. I underestimated how much work goes into a good website. Even with the help of a graphic and web designer, I had to work very hard on creating the lovely website that I have now. I am very proud of what I’ve collaboratively created and thought it’s a worthy calling card. Pictures are very important in interior design, but since I don’t have a formal interior design education, I am still building my portfolio as I go. I have a million ideas and lots of decorating experience from other areas in my life that are waiting to be realized and documented.
It’s not that easy to get clients to trust an interior designer with a limited portfolio. I realize this “what was there first: the chicken or the egg” dilemma is a pretty common issue among solopreneurs that offer services versus a product. I am full of enthusiasm though and feel perpetually fueled by my passion for beautiful and healthy living spaces, especially when I see my clients appreciation for me having made a huge difference in their living environment. 🙂
Tell us more about the business.
D Conti Living is a San Diego based boutique interior design firm that specializes in creative and holistic designs. My goal for each and every one of my clients is to design well-balanced, functional, and aesthetically pleasing spaces that provide harmony, joy, and abundance – a personal sanctuary and retreat. One’s home or office should be a reflection of who we are and what makes us happy; not simply a place to complete tasks or rest at the end of the day.
All of my services build upon and complement each other. My services include interior design, feng shui, staging, decluttering, and even floral arrangements. Rather than focusing on one aspect of interior design, I treat each home or office with a holistic approach: my goal is not only to make a space look beautiful I want it to feel beautiful! I transform San Diego homes into optimized spaces for playing, working, entertaining, and rejuvenating. I take on each project with a deliberate and layered approach.
The design features of my client’s work or living space start with my initial space analysis (feng shui based), then deliberate design elements such as flooring, lighting, wall color, and furniture type are layered into the design and placed according to your home’s energy flow. I also like to infuse each of my projects with a carefully chosen color concept. To me color is nature’s gift to our visual senses, and the right ones give wings to our imagination and sense of aesthetic beauty.
My designs include a tidy design aspect in which I create and restore the functionality and efficiency of the whole household or office. Organizing and decluttering is an important aspect in creating a well rounded and healthy home; a tidy and well-organized home or workplace enhances comfort, joy, and productivity. It’s the perfect platform from which to start your day, and a much needed sanctuary after a long week at work. I base my home organization principles on the teachings of Marie Kondo’s The Joy of Tidying, or The KonMariMethod. The idea is to bring joy into each home or office and to eliminate the items that don’t. Last but not least, sustainability and green living aspects are considered and when possible implemented throughout.
D CONTI MISSION:
D Conti Living utilizes a whole home approach including Interior Design principles, Feng Shui, as well as Sustainability Design to transform homes and workspaces into the thriving and beautiful environments you desire.
D CONTI VISION:
I believe in creating spaces and environments that provide harmony, joy, and abundance.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Southern California has an ideal customer base for my services since many SoCal folks have the awareness, interest, and disposable income to enhance their lives with my services. My services are in essence a luxury, but unless California experiences another steep recession, mindful, sustainable living and working are on a lasting, forward trajectory. In other words, more and more people will take pride in showing off a home or workplace that goes beyond basic functionality and boasts deliberate aesthetics and mindful living.
