Meet Dr. Bettina Experton of Humetrix in Del Mar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Bettina Experton.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As a physician trained in Public Health, former State of California Public Health officer, health economist and health care Informaticist, I founded my company Humetrix to develop and offer health information technology solutions to tackle our big healthcare system challenges.

Whether it is the lack of coordination between multiple healthcare providers in a very specialized and fragmented healthcare system – resulting in the high cost of care and medical errors, or the need for individuals to better manage their chronic conditions at home and overtime with information at their fingertips, this has driven my company R&D and business successes. Humetrix also invested itself in driving new healthcare government policies in the U.S. and abroad to emphasize the critical new role of the patient/citizen to help manage their own healthcare in having access to their health information and the use of mobile tools. Humetrix has won multiple industry innovation awards in the U.S. and abroad and our iBlueButton, SOS QR and TENSIO platforms are being deployed worldwide.

Has it been a smooth road?
My ambition as an entrepreneur in healthcare IT has been to develop and bring innovative solutions to help solve our big healthcare challenges, especially when it comes to the high cost and inequality of the quality of healthcare. These innovative solutions have been centered around a disruptive principle – that of empowering patients with access and use of medical knowledge and mobile healthcare IT tools to best manage their own healthcare. This disruptive principle is now core to the transformation of healthcare systems around the world. It however took patience, persistence and stamina to fight and win over the status quo of healthcare provider systems, payers, legacy IT system suppliers and a medical culture resisting changes!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Humetrix story. Tell us more about the business.
Humetrix develops mobile health platforms that empower everyone to take control of his or her own care, making the healthcare systems safer and more cost-effective. Our technology puts people’s critical health data – conditions, medications, allergies and history – in the palms of their hands, safe under their own control, on their own mobile devices, and guides them to better manage their chronic conditions.

Humetrix platforms are the only ones today that put anyone’s critical health data on their own device, and under their own control. Data is never stored on our servers or in the cloud, where it could be vulnerable to hackers, and is not always available if the user is offline in the emergency department or in a clinic with no Internet access. Instead, it lives on the patient’s own device, where they can not only protect it, but manage it, annotate it, and share it. Other solutions in the market do not take this approach, nor do they have the intelligence built in to translate arcane billing and medical record codes into a longitudinal health record that makes sense and is actionable.

Humetrix licenses its technology platforms to corporate and government organizations for use by millions of their end user clients/ consumers/ beneficiaries/ patients. We typically white label and customize our technology platforms from the user interface and functionality, to our proprietary expert system and data analytics modules. Our core platforms include : 1) The iBlueButton health record access and aggregating platform for users to receive, annotate, store and share their e-health records securely via their mobile devices 2) The SOS QR safety and emergency platform for use worldwide, allowing emergency responders to access users’ emergency records in English, French, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, and Portuguese and 3) the TENSIO chronic care platform, a hypertension coaching app integrating data from self-monitoring devices and the user’s medical records with an onboard expert system for the sending of personalized notifications and alerts directly from the user’s phone or Watch.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Humetrix’s area of activity is at the crossroads of different industries experiencing rapid changes. On one side, the healthcare industry which is redesigning both the delivery and financing of healthcare with consumers asking for more control over their healthcare and the cost of care, and the healthcare IT industry experiencing a big shift towards decentralized, patient facing mobile technology with more consumer control of their data to meet both regulatory changes and cybersecurity threats. These industry changes present a big opportunity for Humetrix which offers patient controlled mobile health platforms.
