Meet Dr. Debbie Rodriguez of Heart of Healing Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine in Poway

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Debbie Rodriguez.

Dr. Debbie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am a doctor of acupuncture & Chinese medicine. I became involved with his profession because I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis, an autoimmune disorder. I was in a lot of pain and I was allergic to the medication so I sought out an alternative means to restore my health. I found acupuncture and herbal therapy. Together, they gave me my life back. I decided to go back to school and devote my life to helping others with their health care needs. I earned my masters in acupuncture and Chinese medicine and after practicing a short while, I furthered my studies and earned my doctorate in acupuncture and Chinese medicine with a focus on fertility and women’s health. I have helped women with fertility issues as well as regulating cycles and hormones. I also strongly believe in educating women in their fertility choices. There are many ways to create a family whether you start early or later in life. I treat a variety of people in my practice – both men and women with fertility concerns. I also treat those with other concerns as well, for example, migraines, sciatic pain, and digestive issues. What helps me to stand out from the rest is my sincere concern to hear what the patient has to say. We work as a team to help them through their health issues.

I have been extremely fortunate to be a member of Return to Wholeness Holistic Health Center in Poway. We offer a variety of modalities and provide a welcoming and safe space for people to heal. Modalities include, colon hydrotherapy, massage, Reiki, holistic counseling for those who have endured abuse or rape.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been many obstacles. During my education, my mom was hospitalized. This created an abundance of stress in my life but further motivated me to become self-employed so I would never have to answer to anyone. The early years were tough. How do you make money when no one knows who you are or what you are capable of doing? Networking! There are many groups out there where you can get your name out. The goal of networking is not to get your colleagues to become clients but to make contacts that help you in the future. My networking group, Simple Success helped me make business contacts as well as very good friends. Sometimes you need to run specials just to get folks in the door. The key is never giving up on your purpose. My purpose was/is to educate the public to the benefits of Eastern medicine and philosophy. This is a different paradigm than the allopathic medicine we have been used to so there is a bit of learning that is necessary but then suddenly, it all makes sense! Then one wonders why the rest of the world is not on board!

A few years ago, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. Again, a stressful time in my life. My focus was on my mom’s healing so my practice took a hit. I had to find another place to practice because my practice got so slow. In Chinese medicine there is a phrase I tell my patients all the time: Energy flows where the mind goes in other words, where your focus lies, so does your energy. Once mom was in a safe place with her illness, my focus went back to my practice and has since flourished. In spite of the ups and downs, I would not trade my profession for anything in the world! I absolutely LOVE what I do. Making a difference in the world, one needle at a time!

Please tell us about Heart of Healing Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine.
The name of my business is Heart of Healing Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine. The name comes from conversations I used to have with my father. He always said, “if you follow your heart, you will never go wrong”. Well, how true that is. What sets me apart, as I am told by my patients, is that I am a compassionate listener. I spend time with my patients and allow them to tell their story. I also strive to educate my patients in how I am treating them. I may explain how I came to the conclusion of their diagnosis and how the organ systems interact with one another. Often when people understand what is happening, they are more compliant in taking herbs or adjusting their lifestyle. I believe every practitioner brings a certain degree of magic to the table when treating someone. An energetic connection is made and the patient and practitioner embark on a healing journey together. I practice from my heart and it shows. Nothing is rote or constant. Each pin is placed with intention and purpose.

I am most proud of the fact that I truly care about my patients and they FEEL it. Many times, new patients are surprised at the time spent with them. For the time I spend with them, they are the ONLY people who matter to me. I learned that from a mentor, Dr. Mao in Los Angeles. He used to treat me like that and I never forgot how that felt. One of the other things I am most proud is being able to give back to humanity. Many times, situations arise where an individual is not able to continue treatment due to finances – I cannot let that happen and will do whatever is necessary to help in spite of the obstacles. It’s a way of spreading the love I have for this medicine and not having to answer to anyone!

I specialize in fertility and women’s health. I love being able to educate women on how Chinese medicine can help enhance fertility by providing encouraged blood flow to the reproductive organs.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I was very close to my father. A favorite memory I have is going for walks in the woods with my dad and our dog. He always encouraged my imagination and allowed me to run “free”. He was big on the importance of family. He became very ill later in life and I learned the true healing power of love. It was then I learned that there is no more powerful emotion than love. So, I chose to lead a life guided by love.
