Meet Dr. Vishaal Mehra of Artemis Institute for Clinical Research in Hillcrest

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Vishaal Mehra.

Dr. Vishaal, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Artemis was founded in 2008 by a group of colleagues with extensive clinical research experience who shared a commitment to developing a more thoughtful approach to conducting clinical trials. We started out solely focused on trials in Psychiatry and Neurology and expanded in 2013 to Internal Medicine and Women’s Health studies.

That same year we opened our state-of-the-art stand-alone facility with both an inpatient and outpatient unit in Hillcrest. In 2017 we expanded to North County with a facility in San Marcos and in 2018 further north to Riverside. Today we enroll patients in studies to test up and coming treatments for Bipolar Disorder, Insomnia, Depression, OCD, PTSD, Diabetes, Osteoarthritis, Uterine Fibroids and are always adding new indications.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We launched in 2008 at the height of the recession. This was less than ideal as there was a sharp downturn in the number of clinical trials being funded. It made for a tough few years but brought us long-term benefit as we learned to make do without big budgets. Since then, we’ve been able to grow and scale in a very efficient manner.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Artemis Institute for Clinical Research – what should we know?
Artemis is a leading patient-focused clinical research company dedicated to advancing medical treatments through rigorous, process-driven trial management. We are most proud of our dedication to customer service for all of our patients, in fact, the top two core values of our company are 1. aiming to serve our study patients and; 2. delivering the best customer experience every day.

Tangible examples include ensuring we see our patients within five minutes of arrival, serving them meals and snacks and providing Netflix for longer visits. We have many patients who really enjoy being on site and interacting with our staff. Many actually re-enroll in trials more than once.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We opened our third facility in Riverside in June 2018 and are starting to recruit into our first trials there. We are in the process of putting our playbook in place so we can scale effectively to other sites in the future.
