Meet Edgar Allan Toh

Today we’d like to introduce you to Edgar Allan Toh.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I spent most of my life on the fence about wanting to be an artist. I initially went to college, looking to major in art, but graduated with a BS in Biology and a Chemistry minor.

I’m self taught other than a drawing class which confirmed what I already knew and an acrylic class which confirmed I was different than any other person that wanted to explore painting in the class. That gave me confidence to give art a try. This freed me to keep getting better no matter how much I felt I messed up. I just kept painting until what was on the canvas was what materialized in my imagination.

Now, I have met a goal I didn’t think was possible or realistic a few years ago. I’m in a gallery and represented.

Please tell us about your art.
I want my art to be happy and unburdened. Many times, art encores emotion but it’s not necessarily happiness. More like reflection.

I want people to reconnect with their childhood fantasies when anything seemed logical. Like swinging on a donut swing or climbing giant donuts to play in a bowl of ice cream.

I also realize my color palette leans toward the brighter side.

My paintings are often playful because I think play is important. Play allows us creativity, play allows us freedom and to hope and value existence.

As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
Success to me is having the ability to do art. To paint or sculpt and to experience the world so you can express what you’ve learned or felt in your art.

What is essential I think in art is to keep on doing art. Trying new things and practicing every day, no matter if it’s just one stroke of the brush or doing a deep dive where time doesn’t exist.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
My work is on display at Pacific Sculpture Gallery in Newport Beach.

I am on Instagram at RavenWorxArt.

A lot is going on in the future. The gallery is planning shows for me when the sculptures are ready of the paintings I’ve painted. Stay tuned for more.
