Meet Eileen Gaffen of Steres Gaffen Media in Del Mar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eileen Gaffen.

Eileen, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started my career as a journalist, writing and producing television newscasts and special segments, for CBS in San Diego. Nearly a decade later, I took the risk to venture out on my own as a publicist and video producer forming Steres Gaffen Media. It was thrilling to have my own business and hard work to grow it. Over time, I developed a niche providing PR for the legal industry, retail, and B2B.

That all changed with a move to the Midwest. I closed the PR business and began a corporate career as public relation manager for a Fortune 100 company and several years later for a $4 billion privately-held corporation.

It was always a dream to return to San Diego and the dream came true nearly five years ago. Settling in gorgeous Del Mar, I re-established Steres Gaffen Media in 2014. Our PR agency works with nonprofits, consumer businesses and authors for product launches, brand awareness, strategic communications, and community relations.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Our friends and colleagues in San Diego welcomed us back with open arms. However, it was hard to start up a small business again. My primary business development strategy is purposeful networking.

I joined the North San Diego Business Chamber and am active on the Economic Development and Business Advocacy Committee; serve on the Board of Directors of the San Diego Press Club; joined a women’s business group and a business referral group, and serve as an advisor to several nonprofits. It helps to remain motivated, positive, and strategic with your time and focus.

Please tell us about Steres Gaffen Media.
Steres Gaffen Media is a public relations agency helping businesses grow by connecting them to the hearts and minds of their customers.

Communications strategy is developed after understanding a business’s goals – what are they trying to achieve – gain more customers, more revenue, increase sales, gain or improve its reputation. Only then do we apply communication tactics, such as publicity, social media engagement, or community relations, to help meet those goals.

I’m proud of our company’s values and integrity. Our clients are our partners and we work hard to help them be successful. The trust placed in our business relationship and public relations work is a value we’re most proud. I believe our work ethic, experience, and results sets us apart from others.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Business has been in my blood since childhood. When I was 12 years old I asked my parents if I could run a part-time summer day camp at the house for the neighborhood kids. I saved all the camp marketing flyers that were sent to our home and created my own marketing materials and delivered them to the neighbors.

A dozen parents signed up their kids and I ran my first business at 12. Much credit goes to my supportive parents who encouraged my entrepreneurship and hopefully had liability insurance!
