Today we’d like to introduce you to Eli Miller and Jamie Allen-Miller.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born and raised in North County San Diego, grew up in Leucadia and Encinitas, attended Pacific View Elementary, Oak Crest Jr High, and was the first graduating class at the new San Dieguito Academy (class of 2000).
My father is a yoga teacher (Tim Miller) and mother was a midwife (Catharine Chichakian). Growing up in north county San Diego, with parents embedded in a holistic and natural based lifestyle, ingrained in me a love of nature and the outdoors.
Fast forward to the present day. I currently live in Vista, with my wife, Jamie and our two kids, Jade and Taj. I work in Escondido and play throughout San Diego, Nevada, Hawaii, Idaho, Canada, Indonesia and any other travel destination we can get to with the family. During our travels, we decided to make it a goal to search for a piece of land to create a family plot that we can build on in the years to come. We found an incredible piece of land in Idaho last year and made the purchase.
I’ve always been into wheeled vehicles, 2 wheels, and 4 wheels. I wanted to find something my wife, kids and I could explore the outdoors with. I also wanted to keep my carbon footprint at a minimum. After searching for what felt like forever, I came across a company called Kuberg. They were out of the Czech Republic and had amazing looking electric bikes/motorcycles. I had ridden BMX, Mtn Bikes, Road bikes, Dirt Motorcycles, and Street Motorcycles and had never seen anything like what Kuberg was making. It looked like a cross between a BMX/Mt. Bike and a mini motorcycle. The kick was there were no pedals, and they were not cheap. I decided I needed to try one. I ordered a Freerider for myself. It was shipped directly to me, in a box, ready to go with only minor handlebar and front tire installation! Charged it up and it was ready to take for a spin.
I never expected the power the bike produced. I was hooked from the first ride. I rode it to work and back without the need to recharge it. Next, I rode it up to the local mountain bike trails and went up and down, and up, and down, and up, and down… I couldn’t believe the range, power, and agility mix the bike offered. My wife, who had never ridden a motorcycle in her life, tried it on level one (beginner) and when she came back around the block, she was grinning from ear to ear.
I decided to get another Freerider for my wife and try out two kids versions for my kiddos. I felt that these would be a great beginning to the two-wheel world. Electric bikes are quiet, clean, and easy to adjust for young and/or beginner riders. With the direct drive, there are no gears to navigate. With the lithium-ion battery and electric motor, the bikes can go places and see things your louder gas bikes can’t. With the adjustable speed and torque options, my kids were able to learn how to ride a twist throttle motorcycle before they knew how to ride a bicycle!
My dream came true, my wife and kiddos are now able to hop on our Kuberg bikes and explore the wilderness or cruise around our back yard track. Without the noise and smell of gas-powered bikes, the back yard electric bike track is making a comeback and will give more people the opportunity to adventure somewhere they may have never been able to go.
After a year with the bikes, countless trips around the neighborhood, and 2 trips to Idaho, we decided that we wanted to share our story with other families. We feel that it has given our family so many opportunities for FUN and to spend quality time together.
Has it been a smooth road?
It’s never a smooth road where we want to go, that’s why you have shock absorbers!
Starting a new business is never easy. But you learn something new each time. My wife and I are both jack and Jill’s of different trades. Not to mention, we are extremely dedicated to our family life and children. Juggling the responsibilities can be difficult but rewarding. Jamie is a full-time Mom, homeschooler, part time photographer, a health & wellness business owner, and is helping with this new venture.
I just celebrated my eleventh anniversary at CMS Recycling in Escondido. I’ve worked my way up from metal sorter/driver to V.P./Sales Manager.
We pride our family in working hard and playing harder.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Kuberg California story. Tell us more about the business.
Art meets function, meets absolute FUN! Kuberg brand’s quality of products, ease of use and cutting edge technology sets us apart from other electric bike manufactures. Their look, low maintenance, environmentally friendly option to transportation and off-road fun is one of a kind.
Coupled with hundreds of hours spent testing, tooling and learning the capabilities of these amazing machines, we will ensure we get the customer hands on the right bike for them and/or their children.
We will offer a local repair shop as part of our Escondido location, to ensure parts are available and you can get your bike back on the road as soon as possible, if needed.
The versatility and quality of the Kuberg brand is one of a kind. We decided to partner with the factory in the Czech Republic to offer Kuberg directly to California. The bikes are available to be shipped from the east coast only, until our grand opening in August 2019. I feel with the option of a street legal version coming this summer, California as a perfect place to launch the electric commuter bike. This bike will be registered, equipped with lights, blinkers, and mirrors, to allow it to be ridden as a motorized scooter. Base models can travel 30 miles, and recharge from a normal wall socket 80% in only one hour.
We are bringing in a limited inventory of assorted bikes with our first shipment and our warehouse will be open by appointment only. We are in the process of building our dream team and plan to have a showroom as part of the warehouse, to display our bikes. In the meantime, we are taking pre orders, and offering FREE SHIPPING for bikes bought in California before August 1st. Who doesn’t want their bikes delivered to their door?! Additionally, we want to personally deliver all bikes purchased in the Southern California area to help build our Kuberg California community.
We are currently promoting the Kuberg brand, and Kuberg California, through our social media sites (Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter), grassroots word of mouth, pop up shows, and demo days, along with passionate riders! We have a couple of pre-orders in the books and are excited to drum up as much buzz for these awesome electric bikes as we can!
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
My family and I believe that these bikes are the future for beach cities, colleges, downtown areas and the overall ‘green’ movement. We are just the beginning of the e-bike revolution. Kuberg Electric Motorcycles are the most versatile bikes on the market. Take them to work, to the beach, the store, to school, take them camping or rent them in a downtown area. With the addition of recharge stations (hopefully using solar), like the carports, electric bikes will soon take over the high traffic areas.
