Meet Elsie Arredondo of Monarch | Arredon Contemporary in La Jolla

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elsie Arredondo.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have run my own art gallery in San Diego since 2013. That was the year I left a successful career in the healthcare industry to follow my passion for art. It has been a roller coaster ride ever since! Full of ups and downs, heart-pounding excitement and gut-wrenching fear but all of it has been soul-filling happiness.

Growing up in Los Angeles I remember a natural pull towards the visual and performing arts. Always drawing and performing on any stage that would have me! Raised by a single mom, she didn’t encourage a love of art. She didn’t think it was practical and way too expensive for a child to participate in. So it was a private love and I did what I could to engage in the arts but eventually, the practicality of life kicked in. After high school, I obtained my undergraduate and eventually my graduate degree in science. In many ways, science is also a creative expression.

After many happy years in healthcare, I still felt something was missing in my professional life. By now, I was in my 40s and my youngest child had left for college. I kept searching for answers and keeping myself open. Then one day in 2012, I discovered an art gallery in La Jolla was for sale. Purchasing the art gallery opened doors and set me on a path I could only have dreamed of.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
For the past few years I have observed trends in the San Diego art market and although I have loved having a gallery space in La Jolla, I know that if I want to continue to serve my artists and collectors, it is time to reconsider our location and overall gallery model. To that end, we are in the process of searching for a larger venue within San Diego County to serve as our headquarters and to best present our artists and their work.

Secondly, we are reviewing our core mission and area of specialty so that we can grow our inventory of artists accordingly. We will be expanding our services to include art appraising within our area of expertise. Lastly, we understand that technology connects us all and that art collectors are not limited to a stationary gallery space. Art collecting is meant to fit a lifestyle and it is this lifestyle that requires artwork to be readily available and accessible beyond the gallery walls. As such, we will continue to create exhibitions outside our gallery space and online.

Owning and operating an art gallery is about business. Yes, it’s absolutely about art but it’s mainly a business. To best serve your artists and clients you must have a successful business yet that can lead to losing touch with the art itself. My intention every day is to not lose focus on why I am in the business of art and that is – to spread the appreciation and love of art!

Monarch | Arredon Contemporary – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Monarch | Arredon Contemporary specializes in paintings and sculptures by the best of emerging, mid-level, and established contemporary artists from around the world.

Through our close relationships with our artists, collectors, and communities, we are privileged to bring the excitement of art collecting to private, public and corporate clients. From our curated exhibitions to our special events, introducing thought-provoking art is at the heart of everything we do.

In 2019, we will be launching-Galería de Ella-a gallery project exhibiting Latin American artwork with a focus on women artists. I believe we are coming to the realization that women and other minorities have not had equal opportunities and recognition in our American Society.

As a daughter of immigrants and a woman, I would be honored to provide a space dedicated to presenting the artistic talents of this group to our San Diego Community.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
1. To have an active and engaging exhibition calendar
2. Artists that are committed to their work and clients
3. The support of the San Diego Community and Collectors

These three markers together would be magical!
