Meet Emily Shipp of Social Graces

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Shipp.

Emily, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always had a love of art and design- I took art classes starting from a young age, and I was always drawing! When it was time to decide on my career path, design was the obvious choice. I majored in Industrial Design at Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama, and my first job out of college was in product design. I later moved on to graphic design, and started freelancing in both graphic and product design while working full-time. This gave me a fairly wide experience base. I’ve worked in housewares design, print and web design, and even as an extension associate at the University of Guam.

I’ve been mainly working for myself for around 10 years– as a military spouse, career portability is key- doing graphic design for a handful of clients that I’ve worked with for years. I started Social Graces two years ago. After my son was born in 2018, I wanted to work from home on my own schedule, and shifting my focus to social media made perfect sense after the feast or famine workload as a generalist. One client grew to two, and two grew to a full schedule of work for me! Living all over the world (previous locations include Guam and Pensacola, Florida) has helped me grow a great network of clients and associates, many of whom are military spouses as well. I love adding value to my clients’ marketing efforts, and social media results are so quantitative that it’s very satisfying to see the results of our efforts.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
All of 2020 was a challenge! My son’s school closed in March 2020, then we moved cross country from Pensacola, Florida in September 2020 (during a hurricane, no less), so keeping up with work in the midst of all that was an ordeal. I’m so lucky to have a supportive husband, Kyle, who helps me ensure I have the time I need to work at the high standard my clients now expect.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Social Graces is a content subscription service for small businesses looking to up their social media game. I provide content calendars, custom, on-brand posts, and even schedule and post on behalf of my clients, so they can spend their time running their business! Clients can be as hands-on or hands-off as they choose in the creation of their social media content.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I’m constantly learning! Through my business, I’ve gained knowledge about real estate, business, athletic gear and so much more. I can’t pinpoint a specific resource because my clients and therefore my work are so varied!
