Meet Eric Berman of Brandetize

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eric Berman.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Eric. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Started my first major company after graduating UCSD which ended up being the original Facebook concept before there was MySpace, Facebook, etc.. It was called College Club- we raised over $75M and had over 400 employees. Things fell apart after the first ‘internet” stock market crash of 2001- It was quite the experience.

After that wild ride, I consulted for a while and then met one of my mentors from my personal growth- a success speaker called Brian Tracy. He needed help with his online business so I started consulting for him and built a team and a solid business selling his programs. That then leads to many others asking for me to do the same thing I did for Brian Tracy for them. That led to the formation of Brandetize in 2014 with 2 additional partners, Rob & Chelsea.

Now Brandetize, with its 35 employees, serves as a full-service marketing and technology team for a handful of brands.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No business ride is a smooth one. As we were 2 months away from going public on my first business, I would have been able to retire before 30 years old – but we lost it all.

Even getting to that point was not easy at all as it was a 7-year struggle (often having months where we barely had money for payroll).

Consulting has its ups and downs and you try to find the right clients. Now at Brandetize, business has been up and down as we have learned to improve our business model and how to attract the best employees and business partners.

Along the way, there are stressful moments on a monthly basis, and it’s hard to plan for them all. But the experience of running a business for over 25 years has definitely helped as the ‘battle scars’ has prepared me for whatever obstacle is to come next.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Brandetize story. Tell us more about the business.
Brandetize is a full-service digital marketing company. We partner with a select # of companies/brands on a performance basis and become their marketing and technology team. Instead of a typical agency that works on a certain function for a company on a limited basis, we actually become the marketing and tech team for those brands and have a deep partnership. Our partners essentially get a team of 10-20 specialists overnight that are working on their brand and we don’t make money until they make money. This creates a real win-win scenario where all of our interests are aligned.

What also sets us apart from others and one of the things I am most proud of us our culture and operational systems. We have invested heavily in culture and infrastructure making Brandetize an amazing place to work.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck has played a fairly significant role in my business. I would like to think you create your own luck by the effort you put into things, but I would say losing everything during my first big business startup due to the timing of the stock market crash was a real tough one. If had happened a few months later, my life would have been much different.

With that being said, I typically don’t think much about luck as that can be too much of a clutch or excuse. You need to prepare yourself for bad luck and take advantage when things go your way, but not to assume things will always be that lucky for you.
