Meet Eric DePaula of Stratum Fitness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eric DePaula.

Eric, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My business partner, Blake, and I grew up together in Sacramento, CA regularly competing in athletics with and against one another. It was a natural progression as a byproduct of competing in athletics most of our lives that we both developed a passion for health and fitness. This lead to the opening of Stratum Fitness (formerly CrossFit Society) in July 2012 and we never looked back. 6 years later we still continue to be students of the health and fitness industry and always strive to improve upon our service to North County San Diego.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Even though it may appear to outsiders or clients that it has been a smooth road and we’ve grown organically there have plenty of struggles. The biggest being the scalability of our business in combination with sustainability long term. A big part of the scalability piece has been putting systems in place to be able to train our coaches effectively to be an extension of our service.

In regards to sustainability, we struggled in our earlier years with trying to have our hands in too many places and realized over time that those additional avenues often become distractions to our main service which is group fitness classes. Since we have honed in on building that core group and making that service the best it can possibly be it has really improved our sustainability and opened up new opportunities for us.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Stratum Fitness – what should we know?
Stratum Fitness started in July of 2012 and is the byproduct of my business partner’s and mine shared passion for fitness. We specialize in bringing functional fitness to the group class setting and the one-on-one environment. Even though we focus on using our entire body in the majority of our workouts we pride ourselves in creating balanced workouts that not only challenge you but also keep you feeling healthy and vibrant for the long haul.

One advantage of working out in our facility is that we maintain small class sizes (6-12 on average) to ensure that every individual is receiving proper coaching and tailoring when necessary. We are the only functional fitness facility in San Diego that delivers a uniquely written program consisting of strength training, CrossFit, bodybuilding and endurance training. It has been our goal to bridge the gap and bring the best of these communities into one fun and rewarding program.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My business partner deserves as much credit as I do. We each have our defined roles within the business but our synergistic partnership is a big part of why our business has done so well.
