Meet Eric Stephenson of Stephenson Digital in San Diego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eric Stephenson.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I first began filming videos with my friends in middle school, about eight years ago now. We started with short films. Whether it was comedy sketches or action movies, I was always creating.

Little did I know, I was actually preparing for my future career.

I fell in love with film and I continued creating throughout high school and entering film festivals. Once I turned 16, I started my first business “Captured Videography” and began filming business videos, weddings, and events.

When I turned 18, I moved up to LA and worked for a short time in the film industry, mainly on the Hulu TV Show “Marvel Runaways.” It was a good experience, but I quickly learned that film was not the route I wanted to take. I started experimenting with music videos and realized that this is what I truly loved and enjoyed.

When I turned 20 in February, I thought It’s now or never.

I took a chance, quit my job started my creative business, “Stephenson Digital.” The business quickly picked up and I’ve been doing music videos full-time ever since!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Most of the struggle was getting started. It was tough trying to break into an industry with an already saturated market of music video directors. Trying to be unique and bring something new to the table.

Starting out, I would reach out to hundreds of artists on Instagram based here in San Diego and Los Angeles. Only a few were willing to give me the chance to create their visuals.

The videos thankfully turned out great, and word quickly spread of who I am and what I can do. Fast forward a few months later, and I am now creating videos for the top artists in San Diego and currently planning videos for massive artists in LA.

Those names will be kept secret for now though, haha.

Alright so let’s talk business.  What else should we know?
I am pretty much a one-man band when it comes to my work. From my past experience making short films with my friends, I had to learn all of the jobs that it takes to create videos. It benefited me in the long run.

I have directed, filmed, and edited all of the music videos that I have done so far! It can be exhausting but is extremely rewarding. I love the whole video creating process, and I’m glad I am able to have a part in all of it.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I feel I’ve been incredibly lucky with all of the opportunities and situations that have happened to me in my life so far.

I’m a firm believer in the idea that “everything happens for a reason.” So, I just keep my head down, work as hard as I possibly can, and let life guide me where I am destined to be.
