Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Carnohan.
Hi Erica, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I went to college at UC Santa Barbara – like most 18-year-olds, I had no idea what I wanted to do career-wise at that point. I started out as a Computer Science major because I was good at math and science, and I liked solving problems. But, after about two years, I lost interest in the path a CS degree was leading me toward. I ended up switching my major to Psychology and getting a Minor in Professional Writing.
After graduation, I moved to Northern California to work for a campus ministry organization for two years. It wasn’t long before I felt San Diego pulling me back home! Having been a missionary, I had gotten used to working in a role that wasn’t your typical nine-to-five, and entrepreneurship started to pique my interest.
I was working at a small marketing agency at this time, and I started to dream about what it would be like to run my own business. I wanted to find a way to put my writing AND tech skills to good use. So, at the beginning of 2021, I “made the leap” and started Seedling Studio. Now, I have a business that helps entrepreneurs and small businesses bring their ideas to fruition, and it’s been such a wonderful, challenging experience!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Having never owned a business before, I knew when I started that it wasn’t going to be easy.
I wanted to build my business on a foundation of integrity, and I quickly learned that unfortunately, not everyone operates the same way. In order for my business to survive, I had to learn how to create boundaries with clients in terms of project scopes, payments, and communication.
Also, starting out as a one-woman operation, I had to learn how to manage my time much more effectively. My first year in business, I really struggled to strike a balance between doing work for clients and doing work for my business. There were many times I over-scheduled myself that first year because I was afraid to turn any clients away. Now, I’ve gotten into a much more sustainable rhythm that allows me to balance client work, business development, and actually enjoying my life!
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Seedling Studio?
Seedling Studio is the go-to website resource for purpose-driven creatives and entrepreneurs. We help businesses create beautiful, functional websites that communicate their value.
Unlike many other website design studios, we put functionality first. This means that rather than specializing in a single website platform like WordPress or Squarespace, we work with each client individually to determine the best solution for their unique needs.
We offer start-to-finish solutions including online strategy, copywriting, website design, and development for entrepreneurs. And we also offer website development for less-techy designers who want to focus on designing instead of learning to code.
What matters most to you?
I believe everyone has something valuable to offer the world, and I want to help people draw that out of themselves. The world needs more people who are fully alive, and it’s my mission to eliminate some of the obstacles in the way of reaching their potential.
