Meet Erica Schneider of Erica Schneider Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Schneider.

Erica, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My love for photography started in high school when I was my school’s yearbook photographer. I borrowed my dad’s old Minolta film camera and our entire yearbook was still shot on film during those four years, many of the images mine. I fell in love with composition, light and the craft of film photography and knew I wanted to have my own wedding and portrait photography business when I “grew up.”

Fast forward almost 15 years later and I have photographed over 150 weddings to date and more family, maternity and newborn sessions than I can count! I now have three little boys of my own and have a new passion for the importance of documenting families as they grow. I specialize in natural light, film photography and love shooting in beautiful, outdoor locations.

Has it been a smooth road?
No! Definitely not. Every year is a learning experience! I have reformulated my pricing more times than I can remember, changed my business name, redesigned my logo and website every couple of years, invested money in high-quality equipment, repaired equipment, replaced equipment, updated equipment.

So much of running a successful business is adapting to the needs of your ideal client, and each year I have to re-evaluate what is important to my brides and grooms and moms and dads.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I have owned my wedding and portrait photography business for 14 years. I specialize in natural light and medium-format film photography. I am known for my outdoor portraits in beautiful, natural locations as well as my natural and candid posing style. I value a timeless look and feel to my photographs that won’t be outdated when trends change but will remain beautiful memorabilia for decades to come.

Film photography is a welcomed creative challenge for me, there is no instant gratification, no viewing the images on the back of the viewfinder or downloading them as soon as you get home. It’s a slow and patient process and I enjoy the pace and the creativity it allows me.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes and no! Yes because San Diego is a beautiful city that also has beautiful natural parks and preserves, which is where I love shooting the most. I prefer to shoot outdoors and during the “golden hour” just before sunset – and in San Diego, you can do that year-round with our amazing weather!

It is, however, becoming more and more expensive to live in California – so as a business owner just starting out, you have to set real and tangible income goals and work your expenses and pricing structure around your cost of living – so you don’t end up *spending* more on your photography business than you make or just barely breaking even.

  • Wedding collections start at $4000
  • Portrait sessions start at $900
