Meet Dr. Erica Wollerman of Thrive Therapy Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Erica Wollerman.

Dr. Wollerman, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I ventured out on my own in private practice as a psychologist about three and a half years ago. I was not sure where that path would talk me as I had heard that it was so difficult to “make it” in private practice, which is essentially the dream for most therapists and psychologists. After lots of hard work, persistence, and networking (lots and lots of networking!), I was full time in private practice within 8 months and looking to expand our reach and ways to support our community.

This is when the vision for our current office, Thrive Therapy Studio, really began. I wanted to cultivate a place of healing for individuals of all ages where we were supportive and collaborative not only of our clients but also of each other as colleagues. I named our office Thrive Therapy “Studio” because I wanted it to feel and really be different than other doctors offices.

I wanted it to feel welcoming and like home to our team and that family that we work with! At the beginning of 2017, my vision became real and we opened the doors of our new office and new company, Thrive Therapy Studio! We now have a four office suite with a dedicated play therapy office that kids and teens just love and 5 clinicians. I hope to continue growing and expanding our team and services to better help the children, families, and teens in San Diego!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My road has definitely had some bumps along the way! Prior to opening my own office, there were years of groundwork in graduate school, unpaid internships, and different jobs that were at times not a great fit for me. Then, with opening my own office, it has been one learning experience after another!

I think some of the biggest struggles for me have been in learning to be flexible as an entrepreneur and to allow myself to change as my situation changes, rather than to get too focused on one idea or goal. Another ongoing struggle (particularly since I had my son, who is 7 months old), has been with time management and making sure I create enough time to meet my clients and employees needs, spend time with my family, but to also be able to take time and work on continuing to grow my business.

Please tell us about Thrive Therapy Studio.
Thrive Therapy Studio is a private psychological practice where we offer individual therapy, group therapy, family therapy, and parent consultation services. We specialize in working with children of all ages (from infancy!), teens, and adults and work with people who are experiencing perfectionism, feelings of insecurity and low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, family challenges, parenting challenges (including attachment and adjustment challenges or concerns) and behavioral issues, relationship or social skills issues, emotional outbursts, and difficulties with focus or attention.

We are known for being a collaborative and warm team of therapists who are focused on individualizing treatment for our clients. I am most proud of our ability to connect with our clients in a very genuine and real way and use this connection to help them make real changes in their lives. We emphasize ways to build from challenges to develop grit and resilience and believe that sometimes things fall apart to be rebuilt in a better, more satisfying way. I believe this sets us apart from other therapists!

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
That is a tough question! Honestly, I would have had more faith in myself that my business would be successful. In the end, this might not have changed very much about the end result of my practice, but it would have been a lot more enjoyable to approach my endeavor in starting a business with the confidence that I would be able to make it work!
