Today we’d like to introduce you to Erika Gervin.
Erika, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
South Harlow began out of my home, as I juggled my previous career in Marketing and my first child. I always knew the design was where I belonged, but had to figure out how to make it happen. It took a big leap of faith and some very trusting Clients, who gave me my first opportunity. From there, the business grew and just kept growing beyond my wildest dreams.
I worked hard, stayed focused, learned as much as I could as fast as I could, and remained humble in the journey. It also required a lot of late nights (and still does at times) but it’s all been so worth it to see the fruits of my labor. In February, we signed a lease on our first studio space (just 3 years in) and this month we celebrated with a grand opening event. South Harlow Interiors continues to grow and expand into retail and we can only imagine what the future holds!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I am of the belief that the struggles make the rewards that much sweeter. There are always challenges with a start-up. In the beginning, there was a lot of juggling (family, 2 jobs, etc.) which meant little sleep. As I transitioned into South Harlow Interiors full-time I also realized just how much I needed to learn to make my design business a success. That too was a challenge because it meant it would take time, and I wanted to dive right in!
However, I realized the importance of truly understanding all aspects of the business from architecture and construction, to the design elements such as finishes and furnishings all the way down to the details in custom window coverings or hardware selections. I continue to learn and be inspired every single day, but what I’ve learned most is that it can’t all be absorbed in a day. Building a business takes time, patience and nurturing. As I grow, it grows.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
South Harlow Interiors is a full-service interior design firm. We specialize in residential design, but can and have also worked in commercial spaces. We work primarily on large-scale projects such as new-builds or remodels. With that comes all the finish selection and execution from tile and hardwood, to lighting, furnishings and accessories.
We concept, we render, we source, we style, and we install, but ultimately, we create spaces that we hope out Clients will be happy to come home to for years to come. As for our aesthetic, each project really is unique, though I consistently gravitate towards a clean palette and spaces that create a sense of calm.
