Today we’d like to introduce you to Erika Rodriguez.
Erika, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I graduated with my bachelor’s degree in Marketing and International Business from the University of San Diego in 2015. I’ve been fortunate to work for several socially conscious companies, such as Lyft, Zipcar, Create Possibility, and Outdoor Travel Adventures. During my 3.5 years at Lyft, I led the social impact efforts in San Diego by launching and overseeing the Community Grants program. I also was on the Lyft team to bring Lyft pilot programs to San Diego, such as Base Mode at Camp Pendleton and Fast Match pickup at San Diego International Airport. However, my time at Lyft was cut short in February 2020 as the team decided to make changes to its local marketing teams. I decided to take this as a sign to start an eco-conscious marketing agency called Nadi Marketing.
My business’s name and the eco-conscious focus come from my life-changing trip to Nadi, Fiji. In mid-December 2012, I experienced first hand the destruction of a category four tropical cyclone, Cyclone Evan. At the time, I was volunteering at an orphanage, and the cyclone came to Nadi before I could book a flight back home. Born and raised in California, we are used to earthquakes that may last a couple of seconds, but during Cyclone Evan, winds that reached up to 115 mph lasted 24 hours. This near-death experience made me realize that our climate was changing, and natural disasters were becoming more powerful. After returning home, I became more aware of my plastic consumption and ways that I was personally affecting the environment. After college, I purposely worked for businesses with values in sustainability, as I believe enterprises play an essential role in changing our social and economic climate. As I was thinking about starting Nadi Marketing, I knew that I wanted to be part of the solution by paving the way for businesses to be environmentally conscious. I also name my company, Nadi Marketing, as an homage to the city that was a turning point for me.
Has it been a smooth road?
Prior to 2020, I would say that I’ve enjoyed the smooth ride of my professional career. Being laid off was certainly a struggle for me as I’ve never experienced that before, and I very much enjoyed working for a company where I truly believed in the mission. It was hard for me to leave, but I firmly believe that was the push I needed to start my own business. The road from being laid off to launching my business in less than two months was a rollercoaster of late nights and quarantine emotions. I’m proud of what I’ve been able to accomplish in such a short time while also being able to adapt to the new environment of Covid-19. Another challenge that I’m facing is putting myself out there virtually. I’m certainly an extrovert and thrive in meeting new people in person, but turning on the camera is a bit different. I am camera shy, and this quarantine period has pushed me to become more comfortable making new connections virtually. I’ve started by going live on my social media channels and attending virtual networking events, and this has been a challenging yet rewarding experience.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking, kayaking, paddleboarding, biking, and San Diego offers all of these and more! San Diego is a dynamic city. As a downside, I would love for it to be easier to explore the city using different forms of transportation besides my car. I love to ride my bike, but I wish there were more bike paths to do so safely!
