Today we’d like to introduce you to Erika Taylor.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I had reached a point in my life where I was not happy. I knew what I wanted to do, who I wanted to be, but I felt stuck. I’d been out of school for many years, but was ready to return. So, I enrolled in an interior design program in the fall of 2012.
With the goal of one day owning and operating my own interior design company, I worked hard- juggling school, work, and family. In the spring of 2016 I graduated with honors and in the following year, Taylored Interior Solutions was born!
I’m a little over a year old, now. I’m still learning and growing.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, it has not been a smooth journey. School was a real challenge for me. My youngest son was shy of a year old and my oldest had started Pre-K when I began taking classes. But, with my mother and my husband’s assistance, as well as my program director, I made it through.
After graduation, I worked for a small staging company. However, I wasn’t staging, I was the office manager. It was okay when I first started, but after a few months, the job began to be problematic in many ways. I was let go after a little over a year and it was a blessing in disguise.
I decided to focus on starting my business while I was still working. So, once I was let go, I was forced to get it together.
Taylored Interior Solutions – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Taylored Interior Solutions’ main focus is helping clients see the possibility of a well-designed space through the aid of custom 3D renderings. I pride myself on creating an experience that is Taylored to fit the needs, personal style, and budget of each of my clients. I offer full interior design services for residential and small- scale commercial projects. I also offer virtual design for clients who aren’t in the Philadelphia area.
I’m most proud of building my company from scratch. I’ve done everything from creating my logo to creating my website. I’m a new blogger, too… my first blog post was about my mother, who passed in November and the restoration of her house. It wasn’t an easy piece to write, but therapeutic. I’m proud of becoming a blogger, I get to share with everyone the renovation process and other design tips.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success, for me, is continuing to do what I love all while getting paid to do just that.
Isn’t that the dream? It’s also the process of learning and growing as a designer. I want to be the best at what I do, I want to mentor one day and help the designers who come after me be their best, too!
My only criteria is an adequate workspace. It’s something I don’t currently have, but will very soon. It’s absolutely essential! I feel stifled at times because I don’t have an office space dedicated for me to be creative.
