Meet Monica Vidrio of Esthetics By Monica in Bay Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Vidrio.

Monica, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My journey in skincare started at age 9 when I got my first break out. Having endured bad skin most my life, I relentlessly seek to find the cure and tried every single product from over the counter, to prescription and any home remedy out there. As an adult I learned to control my acne. After working in a physical therapy office I knew whole heartedly that I needed to help people but physical therapy was not for me. At age 24 I decided to go back to school to become an Esthetician. I felt that having gone through major skin issues myself it would help me help my clients. I worked at a day spa and a salon and learned the basics of skin care but always wanted to gain more knowledge so I got certified in advanced esthetics and took various certification classes for the new and cutting edge devices. I moved from Sacramento to San Diego 5 years ago and felt that throughout my work with skin I noticed a strong mind-body connection to acne and noticed that worry and stress seemed to increase acne. I decided to study psychology. Studying psychology has helped me better understand my clients and to help treat the emotional side effects that come with having acne. Acne sufferers can face so much pain and self-confidence issues when dealing with their skin. My first job in Sunny San Diego was at a small spa on the beach it was perfect for my first year living in San Diego but I felt the need to grow so I advanced to a medical spa. During my time at the medical spa I learned a lot about the medical side of skin as well as how to design a website and use social media for business. Unfortunately, I felt powerless and stuck at the medical spa with no room to grow I was under-compensated and unappreciated. I felt like I was not valued as an employee or even as a person there. I was unhappy and felt sad that I couldn’t empower my clients the way I felt they needed to be empowered as strong beautiful people and I refused to push unnecessary procedures on clients. It was then that I decided to start my own business. This was not an easy decision. I would be leaving a stable job and spend literally all my savings on something that could completely fail. I was living with my boyfriend at the time but I didn’t have any financial support from anyone in case my business went under. I decided to go for it and went all in my own business.

Shortly after that, I left my boyfriend and moved out of our apartment with my dog. I did not want a second job I felt like if I got a second job I would be giving up on my business…. so I lived with my sister for a short period. It was a real low point in my life dealing with my break up and not having a place of my own to live but I decided that failure was not an option. I was going to succeed! I commuted at that time over an hour to and from work and worked from dusk till dawn on my business. It was challenging because I had not a clue how to start a business. It was very important to create a serene studio and have my clients feel safe and trust that with me all skin care needs will be met as I work with both the physical and emotional side of skin. To build my business I created a website and my own brand and I sent out flyers , I did Groupon, I placed ads, I did network meet ups and walked from door to door and business to business and I talked to everyone I could to build my business.  I wanted to focus on skin and especially acne. I found a clinic called Face Reality in San Leandro, Ca. that was miraculous for my own skin and certifies aestheticians to successfully treat acne through a program that has a 95% success rate. The program focuses on changing your diet, adding supplements and products at home and professional treatments every two weeks. Esthetics By Monica’s clients have really benefited from this program and we have seen outstanding results, it’s been amazing for business as well. I also decided to get certified in The Rezenerate Pen. Which is the most cutting edge Nano technology in needling the skin. It’s amazing for wrinkles, hyper-pigmentation and plumping of the skin. Esthetics By Monica Skin Care studio offers a range of skin care treatments from every skincare concern.  After a few months of living with my sister my business was busy enough that I was able to get a place on my own that is very close to work and business is so busy that I plan to keep growing as a business. This Past May I celebrated my One year anniversary by throwing my first public event. The event was catered and had live music, chair massage and home brewer Chris Miller donated 5 kegs as well as event planner and Psychologist Manuel Avila helped plan and throw the event. We all celebrated a successful year and it was extremely special to have so many wonderful people by my side and an amazing event after much hard work.
