Meet Freddy Macdonald of Freddy Fox Photography in Downtown San Diego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Freddy Macdonald.

Freddy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started photography in high school, learning how to process negatives and develop prints in the darkroom. It was a creative outlet and a way for me and my friends to capture our skateboarding adventures together. Later in life I came back to photography again in digital format. I started out doing portraiture and spread out into commercial work for local business. After having my photography studio for about 7 years and developing a true love for the potential of Photoshop, I decided that this type of work didn’t appeal to me anymore. I decided to focus on the photographic art side of things with heavy use of Photoshop to create fantasy images that let my imagination flow free and unrestrained. I consider myself more of an artist these days than a photographer, I hope to market myself as such by continuing to do art shows and promote my work for sale as well as doing commissioned pieces.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It is very difficult to make it as a photographer these days, I had some real financial problems trying to continue down that path.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Freddy Fox Photography – what should we know?
I specialized in fantasy art pieces, specifically mermaids. My photography studio experience combined with my photoshop abilities set me apart from others I believe.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I never had a lot of support over the years, my own love for what I do has kept me going. Some of my idols that inspired me through the years included photographers such as Joel Grimes, Sue Bryce, Brooke Shaden, Josh Rossi, and Alexia Sinclair.
