Meet Frederica Ginsburg of

Today we’d like to introduce you to Frederica Ginsburg.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Frederica. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My name is Frederica and I’m the founder of a non-profit organization called Scratch My Belly (EST. 2014), an all breed foster based dog rescue.

We rescue dogs from high kill shelters in Southern California, as well as animals coming from owner surrenders, hoarding cases, strays and also some animals from the streets of Mexico. Our ultimate goal is to provide the BEST opportunity, to these often overlooked animals, to find loving forever home. Many of them come into the rescue with huge medical bills and we strive to find donations to help off-set all those vet care costs that can easily exceed thousands of dollars in just one pup. At SMB we do NOT have limitations based on age, breed or medical condition, we help as many as we can base on foster availability and funds to properly care for our “recruits”

I moved to the United States 20 years ago from Brazil, and after living in different cities in Brazil and also in Nigeria for a few years, I realized that my passion for animals could make a difference no matter where I live. My passion come into place when I realized that thousands of animals were dying every year in local Southern California shelters for lack of time, space and enough “walk-in” adopters. With the help of volunteers, we started out small helping 2-3 dogs at the time, slowing we grew our foster base and today we will hold over 30 dogs in the rescue as we continue to grow.

We are happy to say that in 2017, we were able to save over 100 animals and it doesn’t matter how long some will take to get adopted as long we as know they are going to the most perfect forever home.

*** Something fun about me… I’m obsessed with taking selfies kissing our rescued dogs and you will see many of our pics of me kissing them. It makes me HAPPY and I hope to pass that love on to my two kids!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
In rescue it is definitely not all roses… on a daily basis, you see yourself challenged and with tough decisions on hand. From procuring quality fosters, raising funds and racing against the clock to get animals into safety before they are euthanized and getting back to everyone on a timely manner, it is definitely a stretch of time.

Growing the foster program has been interesting in so many aspects, we know we want our “recruits” to be safe and properly cared for, we know that some people get concerned how long they will be fostering and if they will have input on the adoption placement.

Finding sponsors is also something we have been working on, as many of our dogs in the program come with extremely expensive vet bills.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
“Scratch My Belly is an all breed rescue here to save and create compassion and education towards overlooked shelter animals. We apply 110% of our efforts to finding not just a home for our rescued animals, but the BEST home.” – Frederica Ginsburg, Founder

Scratch My Belly is a non-profit, all breed dog rescue created to save animals from high-kill shelters in Southern California and the streets of Mexico. Since being founded, we have worked tirelessly both individually and with the help of other rescue groups to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome over 300 pets in need.

Every year, over 10 million animals are brought into animal shelters across the USA alone, and more than 5 million of those are put to sleep via euthanasia or gas chamber. That is an average of 10,000 pets per day! At Scratch My Belly, our mission is to find loving, forever homes for these animals and to raise funds to help the many neglected, injured, and sick pets deemed unadoptable.

If anyone would like to support our rescue they can do it two ways: One by going to our website ( and making a tax-deductible donation to help with one specific dog or any dog, or by purchasing our special edition t-shirt by Hylete (

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Our long-term goals are very simple:
– Continue providing foster care to our rescued pets by growing our foster base of responsible and loving individuals
– Open a facility the public may visit to adopt our rescued dogs
– Raise funds for medical care for partnership cases with other rescues
– Educate the public about shelter animals to reduce the negative stigma associated with ‘rescued’ pets
– Continue to work on our partnership with Hylete, as we are one of their charities of choice and we believe in working with companies committed to community involvement and awareness.
