Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabriel Feitosa.
Gabriel, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started grooming at the age of twelve in a small town outside of Sao Paulo, Brazil. I used to take my sister’s dog to the grooming shop and one day asked the groomer to teach me how to groom. I eventually took on a regular position working after school at the shop, developing my skills. At 15 I started working for one of the most prestigious kennels in South America, learning and developing show grooming skills and specialty techniques. After working three years with Hampton Court Kennels, I took a position as the Coordinator of Education and Teacher at Unipet Brazil, developing and instructing new groomers.
In my spare time, I worked with Johnny Duarte the internationally awarded animal photographer, preparing dogs for over 35 ad campaigns including music videos, TV, Magazines, Pet Product Packaging, and Reference Books. I also worked preparing show dogs for the top breeders in the country and eventually was contacted by Paul Flores, one of the top Bichon-Frise Breeders in the World offering me a position as groomer and handler at his Kennel here in the U.S. I spent two years working with him, learning and perfecting my grooming and handling skills as well as competing in grooming competitions across North and South America, I have received awards in 4 countries.
During that period I met my husband Jeremy and last year we moved to the San Diego area looking for a new adventure. Shortly after moving to the area I met Leel Michelle the owner of Bow Wow Beauty Shoppe, which was a signature grooming shop and pet boutique in the Hillcrest Area. Leel and I became fast friends and business partners. We now co-own Bow Wow Beauty Shoppe and Gabriel Feitosa Grooming Salon, a vintage dog bakery, boutique and grooming salon.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When I first started grooming in Brazil, it was not common to find educational programs dedicated to Pet Grooming. The grooming community is a very tight-knit circle and you have to work hard and pay your dues to earn the trust and respect of breeders, handlers and groomers. After you have put in the time and effort to show them you are serious, they will share their knowledge.
Gabriel Feitosa Grooming Salon – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?

We are located in Bow Wow Beauty Shoppe Pet Boutique and Dog Bakery, located near the corner of Howard and Park.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
This year I was invited to speak at Mega Grooming Show, the largest grooming event in Latin America. I spoke to an audience of over 700 groomers from all across Brazil and other parts of South America. To come back home after three years away and to be received so warmly and have the opportunity to speak in front of so many people, words cannot express how thankful and how proud I was.
