Today we’d like to introduce you to Gary Kasl.
Gary, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started off going through the photo program at San Diego City College, they have an amazing program there. During school, I was offered a position as a photographer at a local portrait studio doing family photos. I stayed there for about 3 years learning as much as I could in the field as a working photographer and I worked my way up to one of the top photographers in the company.
I soon started working weddings and taking on outside projects in other genres. I decided I wanted to work my way into the commercial photography field and figured that shooting houses could be a profitable business considering my location. So I started approaching realtors and offering my services. It started off kind of slow but then I landed a great client and then things just took off from there. I fell in love with shooting homes and interiors. The complicated lighting situations and working under pressure was something I was already used to, so I took to it well. It’s been almost 3 years since I went full time doing architectural and interior photography and it’s still getting more exciting every day. My small company has grown to a full production team and we continue to grow. We are venturing into new places and we all look forward to what the future holds.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It was and still is challenging figuring out the right way to go in every aspect. Running a photography business is just like any other business, there are challenges all along the way.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about SoCal Property Portraits – what should we know?
We specialize in real estate and hospitality marketing. We do photos, video, 3D scanning, virtual reality tours, aerial photo/video, lifestyle and more. We really are a one-stop-shop for marketing material. We are most proud of the impact our work has on making sales for our clients. We really want the best part of our work to reflect on our clients so they benefit from having us as a part of their team. That’s what makes us so invaluable to them and that’s what separates us from our competition.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Oh yes, definitely. My wife, Mary Grace, was a huge part of getting this off the ground. She was my only teammate for the first year. Kyla Akasha of Spotlight Studios has been a huge impact on my career. She was my first employer/mentor in photography. There are lots of other friends and family who have cheered me on, too many to mention here. But another huge part of where we’re at now is my video partner Rod Phillips. He’s been great and does great work. And of course, my loyal clients play a big part in our success and I’d love to thank them all.
