Meet Ginger Hill of Ginger Hill Marketing & Design in Encinitas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ginger Hill.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
In my early 20s, I found myself with a degree in Communication from San Diego State University and no clue as to what I wanted to do with my life. At the time, it was the mid-90s, my hometown of San Diego did not have a bustling economy or many career opportunities and the dotcom industry was just starting to take off in the bay area. I decided to move to San Francisco — without a job, friends and little money in my pocket. It was the best thing I could have done at the time. I forced myself out of my comfort zone and put myself in situations that required self-reliance and allowed me to make great things happen in my life on my own terms. For a young woman in her mid-20s, it was a very empowering experience.

While in San Francisco, I worked for companies in the financial and high-tech industries that, while not suited to my interests, offered invaluable experience and exposed me to quality design. Art and design was always an interest of mine and I had a hunch that graphic and web design might be a great fit. I took a few graphic and web design courses through UC Berkley and picked up a side freelance marketing and design gig for a restaurant in the city. That was my first taste of working on my own. I loved it!

After moving back to San Diego in 2002 and working both in-house and on the agency side for the pharmaceutical and medical device industry, I was completely disenchanted by the corporate world, I decided it was time to go on my own, so in 2006, I started Ginger Hill Marketing & Design. Business took off immediately as I picked up web and design projects through friends, acquaintances and old colleagues right away. It’s been a steady flow of referrals ever since and is a perfect fit for my lifestyle and skill set. I’m fortunate to have amazing, appreciative clients who often become good friends. Exceeding my clients’ expectations while helping them with their business goals is what motivates me to get out of bed every day.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
By and large, it’s been a smooth road. I attribute that to the 10+ years of business experience prior to going on my own. It took a couple of years to figure out how I like to do business and communicate this through terms in proposals and to quickly identifying clients who are a good fit to work with, but I have been very fortunate to not have any catastrophes or major conflicts.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Ginger Hill Marketing & Design offers a full spectrum of marketing, photography, branding, graphic design, web design and web development services for clients in a broad range of industries. We are known for providing high-level strategic and tactical support, expertise, personal attention, responsiveness, transparency, integrity and fast turn-around.

What were you like growing up?
I always wanted to be outside playing hide and seek with neighbor kids, making forts in the canyon nearby, riding dirt bikes with the boys, playing with barbies with the girls, doorbell ditching and getting away with general mischievousness. I suppose one could say that I was an adventurous girly girl who wasn’t afraid of getting a little dirty, liked diverse friends and causing a little trouble.
