Meet Ginger Rees of Gingerly Wax

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ginger Rees.

Ginger, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was the girl that didn’t have much body hair and non-existent eyebrows, so I didn’t really care about getting rid of any strays that may or may not be there… While in cosmetology school, however I found the love of hair removal. ‘The hair is there and then it’s gone’ Instant gratification! (Ok, maybe in 15 minutes) I never had any intention of owning my own business but after working in the waxing industry for someone else for a few years I thought about it. One day, my daughter and I were driving around North Park looking for a house to rent when we came across the salon where she got her first haircut. It was available, I figured it was a sign! In less than 24 hours it was mine and I thought “What the heck did I just do?”. Within a year and a half, I was doing so well I decided to expand. I moved to this awesome space in South Park. Now, seven years and five employees to the day. I opened my second location which ironically happens to be my original location.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I have been blessed. The first 6 months I wasn’t even sure if I would be able to make rent but it always worked out (My cox cable bill went into collections though) I have had some of the most amazing girls work for me and most of them have stayed for years and even come back to work for me/with me if needed.

My biggest struggle has been trying to balance between being a boss/owner and being a friend with my employees. I also have a little bit of a control issue with everything and anything and sometimes it’s hard to let things go or trust that my girls can do as good as job as me. Since I am so detail-oriented I have trouble delegating smaller tasks while I tackle the bigger beasts. I feel I’m doing much better with that! Or am I? Yes, I am!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Gingerly Wax story. Tell us more about the business.
We specialize in kick-ass, top of the line exceptional customer service! Quality over quantity. I believe that customer service is dying in this world. I will not let it! The majority of the industry wants to get you in and out and make as much money as possible. That is not us! We are about cultivating a relationship with our clients and are very proud of this. Of course, we all want to make a profit but not at the expense of our clients. We also specialize in first-timers. They are already so nervous coming in to get their pubic hair ripped out so I like to break the ice by making them laugh or singing to them. We also produce waxing parody videos for our social media sites, where we get to be creative and have some fun. This is what really sets us apart!

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t really believe in luck. Can we use another word? I believe in the law of attraction. What you put out in the world comes back to you. If something really great happens to me, I am grateful. If something that I perceive as negative happens I try to ponder, why did this happen? What role did I play? What am I supposed to learn from it? On another note many great things have come my way and I have a ton of support of other local business owners.
