Today we’d like to introduce you to Giovanny Rios.
Hi Giovanny, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started baking at a very young age. I was obsessed with my Easybake oven. This is what first sparked my love of baking. My mom would take my sibling and me to our local library, where I would check out recipe books. One of my favorite memories is her taking me to the grocery store to buy ingredients. I always enjoyed planning birthday parties for my younger sister, even having pretended weddings with all my neighborhood friends.
As I got older, I continued my love of baking and decorating. Having my son was a huge turning point as he got older. He had his own ideas for his birthdays and of course, they were always ideas of characters that weren’t very well known, so I had to be creative and bring his dream birthdays to life. As a young single mom, he was my motivation to continue my education in culinary arts and business. I have a very supportive family that encourages me and helps out whenever they can.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I had to overcome many obstacles. I’m a single mom, I’m a full-time student, I also have a full-time job at a nonprofit agency here in San Diego. In 2018, I was laid off for six months and had to figure out how I was going to provide for my son. This is where I finally overcame my fear and decided to start Dessert First. I have had many sleepless nights, many breakdowns but seeing all I’ve accomplished and everything I’ve yet to is what makes it all worth it.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I enjoy creating one-of-a-kind desserts and decorations; I don’t want to be like everyone one else. What I do you can’t find in stores. I dream ideas and have visions. Bringing them to life gives me so much excitement. I’m so proud of my small business. I first started with maybe five customers in the first year now I’m booked having to turn clients away. I never imagined I would be owning a business doing something I love that I once thought would only be a hobby.
What makes you happy?
Seeing how proud my son and my family is makes me the happiest. Having the opportunity to create beautiful desserts, tables, and events and seeing how happy customers are that makes me happy. Seeing how far I’ve come makes me happy.
