Today we’d like to introduce you to Gisele Chalhoub.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Gisele. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Originally from Lebanon, I studied Fine Arts in Beirut. I speak 4 languages including Arabic, English, French and Spanish. When I moved to the San Diego in 1994, my background in art got me into event design. I began by volunteering at various events, such as church fundraisers, to help them set up and plan events. This is where I started realizing that I could put my creative background to use. Shortly afterward, I planned my own elaborate birthday event, which got the attention of many of my friends who began to ask me to plan their events as well. I then decided to enroll in an Event Management course at a local community college to learn about the business aspect of the industry. That lead to creating Events By Gisele.
Event planning is my way of being creative because instead of painting a 2-D canvas, I am able to create 3-dimensional events that help couples’ dreams come true. My background in art allows me to make each event unique and different from the last by incorporating everything that the client needs to make their occasion perfect. For me, Events By Gisele is more than just event planning, it is event designing, where each special occasion is suited to the clients’ expectations.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the largest obstacles I had to face was initially balancing my family with my new business. My kids were still at a young age when I started Events by Gisele and transitioning between being there for my family meanwhile giving my clients my undivided attention and availability was hard at first. This challenge leads to learning how to be both organized and artistic simultaneously, which is an important aspect of event planning.
Setting myself apart and being able to confidently plan various styles and types of events by having the necessary knowledge and background to do so is also very important. A lot of event planners are available, but what sets me apart from them is my creativity, experience, attention to detail, organization and constant involvement in every single detail until the end of the event.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Events By Gisele – what should we know?
At Events By Gisele, my team of vendors and I are able to plan any type of event suited to my client’s needs and expectations. This includes destination weddings, Bar/Bat Mitzvah’s, birthday parties, weddings and many more!
San Diego is an extremely popular place to have a destination wedding. I believe that a wedding should be iconic, memorable and incredible, just like your love story. When you come to San Diego, you can make your dream wedding come true against a coastal backdrop that can’t be found anywhere else.
Bar/Bat Mitzvah celebrations are themed events that can be portrayed using colors or can be a unique way to showcase interests or hobbies at unique venues.
Multiple components lead to a successful event. Working with the right team is key, so for each event, I gather the right team of vendors that fit the client’s vision perfectly and make their dream come true. That takes a lot of networking and research as a continuous effort to stay updated with the most reliable vendors and latest trends. This is a part of the job that the client doesn’t see or experience.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Events are high-stress time, however, it is important to keep in mind that as the Event Planner, it is essential that I maintain a calm personality even under high stress, in order to ensure that my clients have a smooth running, stress-free and fun time on their special day.
Something that I take pride in is my ability to listen to each client and create a vision along-side them of their
dream wedding. Each wedding is uniquely tailored to their specific needs and visions based on our teamwork together, rather than essentially “copy and pasting” ideas from other weddings. Each event is like starting from scratch and working together with the couples/clients to build their perfect event.
I like to conduct my business as a team effort. I rather work not only with the best vendors but with my clients together, in order to make their visions come to life. I believe that doing this makes each event and occasion more personal and unique rather than taking my own ideas and presenting them. However, due to my extensive artistic and creative background, I am able to offer suggestions as needed for us as a team to build upon together.
In addition, it is important to follow and keep up with the latest trends and suggesting the most original and modern innovative ideas that keep my clients’ events referred to as the “trendsetters” for other events. Any occasion is a good reason to party. Share your ideas with me and I can make any occasion special and unique to you. Everything is possible with a great concept and Gisele. I design and plan weddings big and small, fundraising events, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs and birthday parties.
