Meet Glenn Frey of Black Mountain Landscape Design in North County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Glenn Frey.

Glenn, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
The landscape design was a second act for me career wise after three plus decades in healthcare. I decided to follow my passion and design landscapes, which involved going back to school. My wife had also been in healthcare for three plus decades and was looking for a change so she came on board as co-owner and handles marketing.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I finished school and started the business during the economic downturn approximately ten years ago and it was difficult building up the business initially. Once the economy improved things fell into place. I continued in my healthcare profession part time for a couple of years which helped cash flow. Once I finally cut the cord it felt good to be doing what I wanted professionally.

Please tell us about your business.
I create landscape designs on CAD (computer aided drafting) for home owners. I specialize in sustainable designs and try to use a minimum amount of resources, not only for the installation of the design but moving forward with the maintenance of the landscape. Being in southern California, using a minimum amount of water is key. I take pride in the fact that every project is a custom design specifically for that owner. The landscape must fit the owner’s needs because we spend so much time outdoors here. Customer service is key to our business and we listen to the home owner.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is a home owner that is happy with the end product. I am a designer and assist clients in finding an appropriate landscape contractor for the installation of the design. Ultimately I want the owner to be thrilled with the landscape after the project is completed. If there is an issue with the landscape, it doesn’t matter if it is a design or installation issue, it needs to be fixed so we are all happy at the end.
