Meet Hanan Madbak of Crystroll

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hanan Madbak.

Hanan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Crystroll began with a childhood love of trolls combined with an adult love of crystals.

I stumbled upon a vintage troll in a toy shop in 2010 that reminded me of my love for troll dolls from childhood.

It was not until a few years later, while I was training as a yoga instructor when I discovered my love for healing crystals.

Soon after, the idea to make crystal haired trolls came to me in a dream when I was trying to figure out what to do with my life. I was feeling lost and suddenly felt very strongly that my spirit guides were telling me to create crystal trolls. I remember thinking, “but who is actually going to want to pay for these?! Can I make a living doing this? Is this idea too crazy for other people?” I brushed off the idea initially but continued to be greeted by crystal haired trolls in my dreams when I would fall asleep at night.

One day I finally decided to make one for myself and posted a picture of it to my personal Instagram account. A lot of my friends asked for one, so I sort of facetiously created my @crystr0ll account. From there, everything started falling into place. I was blown away by how many other troll/crystal loving people were out there. Crystroll was embraced so warmly by such a loving community, encouraging me onward with my accidental business. I taught myself how to build a website and eventually, I started adding more items for sale to my site.

For me, Crystroll balances the juxtaposition and unity of past and present. Upcycling an old obsolete toy from my past and turning into something new again supports my love for the environment. I have developed a passion for making these crystal trolls and put my heart into creating each one. I smudge the crystals with sage before working with them (to clear previous energy) and use reiki to charge them with positive energy and loving intentions, which will carry on with the trolls to their new owners.

My hope is to share the magical healing properties of crystals with others and Crystroll lets me do this in a fun way!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As an introverted person, putting my creative ideas out there for the world to see was an arduous process for me. I luckily was supported by encouraging and kind people from the very beginning. I even had strangers going out of their way to share how happy my products made them…that is the special part about being in such a mindful community–you’re surrounded by people who truly care about your well being while spreading their love. The most challenging part was coming to see the other side of this by discovering people who were copying my ideas. People are always going to be inspired by each other and that is a beautiful and powerful thing–to take someone else’s idea and put your own spin on it, thus creating something new. However, I had one customer who purchased a Crystroll from me, who then immediately started her own Crystal Troll business identical to mine.

Even though the initial crystal troll idea was already there for me at this point, creating new themed Crystrolls and new products can take a lot of time and effort. I would spend weeks brainstorming a new troll outfit or playing with a new flower crown style, to then see the other account launching the same exact product that I just released a week later. It really hurt me to know someone was watching my every move, copying each new idea I had just poured myself into and then getting credit for it. It was discouraging at first, especially knowing that this happens all the time to artists all over (and there is not much you can do about it). BUT! This experience taught me so much about myself and about what is important. Rather than allowing myself to be upset at this other person, I tried my best to focus on my work. My purpose. The reason I began this business in the first place…which was to bring light, happiness and positive energy to others. There will always be people out there who will try to bring you down, but finding your own power and staying true to who you are will be your anchor, grounding you and driving you forward.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Crystroll is a realm of magic and mischief. The balance between old and new. Childhood mixed with adulthood. Healing and humor. Highlighting the beauty of the connection between the two.

We specialize in crystal haired troll dolls, which are called Crystrolls. Crystrolls come is different themes to represent different people. For example, we have a Yoga Crystroll that comes with a mini yoga mat, and also have a Tarot Crystroll who wears gold bangles and comes holding miniature tarot cards. We try to keep them mindfully themed but also play on vintage pop culture. We also sell other troll themed items like Plantrolls that have plants for hair, as well as classic vintage trolls for the purists. We have branched out into other natural healing products like New Moon Ritual Sprays, chakra essential oil rollers, floral sage bundles, and crystal shaped soaps. Our newest addition: My Crystal Ponies, which are My Little Ponies with crystal hair and flower crowns that can be customized.

One of my favorite things is to create custom Crystolls. We invite our customers to request their own theme or accessories for their Crystroll. Someone recently asked me to make them a Guy Fieri themed Crystroll and I had so much fun designing that one! We have made a Ziggy Stardust Crystroll, as well, which has been my favorite so far. It is really rewarding to have someone come to me with their ideas and I get to bring them to life. Every single troll is made to order, meaning, even if someone orders a pre-made design without any customizations, it is still created specifically for that person. We do not have shelves full of pre-made Crystrolls waiting to be sent out. Yes, it does take longer than if we had a huge operation making them ahead of time, but as one single person making each order myself, I get to be so much more intentional about the energy that goes into the process.

As fun as it is to design and style the trolls, a huge part of what I do is healing energy work. I am able to clear the crystals and program them with loving energy. I use my knowledge of reiki to radiate healing into each thing I make so that the owner can feel those vibrations when their package arrives. Often times we get orders that are made for friends/family that come with notes from the buyer. When someone tells me, for example, their order is going to their friend who is in the hospital, I would then channel healing energy into that Crystroll, which would be different energy than I would use for someone who ordered a Crystroll for their sister’s birthday. I believe my customers can feel those intentions when they open their packages. We have hundreds of reviews with all five stars and hearing the responses I get about our products is deeply heartwarming.

Even though other crystal troll shops have popped up after us, we are still the only one so far making crystal-ized My Little Ponies!!!

What were you like growing up? Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I grew up in Fallbrook, surrounded by nature. Our home was on the top of a hill overlooking a private forest. I spent most of my time outside climbing trees and building forts. On top of this, I am a Capricorn, so I have settled nicely into being an introvert. I can be pretty shy and guarded when first meeting people, but if you ask my friends, they will all tell you I have a serious troll side in me, where I tend to be silly and mischievous. After eight years in San Francisco, I returned home to San Diego. I bought a 48′ Trawler boat one year ago and am living on it in the San Diego bay! Other than sailing and making trolls, I love doing yoga, going camping, and being surrounded by trees. 🙂
