Today we’d like to introduce you to Harry Kendall.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Harry. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have always had a passion for playing soccer ever since I was young. As I have gotten older, I still love to play soccer, but I get greater joy out of introducing other children to the beautiful game and instilling a love for the game in them like I had when I was their age. When I moved to San Diego to continue my education at SDSU as a business major, I realized that many of the schools surrounding the college area did not have any after school sports programs for the children to participate in. Playing sports after school has had such a positive impact on my life, from meeting new friends and team building to giving me more self-confidence and improving my performance in school. I knew I had to start some program so that these children in schools in lower income areas still have the same opportunities I had to get out, get active, and play sports and that is how MLSC was born.
We first started only one soccer program at one elementary school in San Diego, Wegeforth Elementary. Our programs quickly became a huge success with the children and the parents loved our low cost programs that also offered many extra discounts and scholarships for free admission for families that were going through a difficult time as making money is not what we were there for, we want every child to have an equal opportunity. Now that we had set up a great program at Wegeforth Elementary, we wanted to expand our programs to more schools so that we could positively impact more children’s lives.
Currently, MLSC has not only expanded our soccer programs to 5 elementary schools in San Diego but also started running basketball programs to reach out to even more children! We are so proud of what our programs have accomplished so far and we look forward to how many children’s lives our programs will positively influence in the future!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting your own company at the age of 20 while also being a full time student was not easy. There were many times where I had more than a full schedule and was not sure if I would be able to stay on top of both my education and my company but I knew I could do it as long as I managed my time correctly and got the help that I needed to run my growing business.
Major League Sports Coaching – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Our company is known for our extremely low cost, high quality after school soccer and basketball programs. Why our company thrives is that we keep our costs to a minimal and our fees only charge what operating expenses we have to pay to run the programs, nothing more, so parents do not have to pay these huge prices to get their kids in an after school enrichment program.
We take pride in how many children our programs have given the opportunity to play sports. Even if we just positively impact one child’s life, all of this would have been worth it but the fact that we have positively impacted over 300 children’s lives and counting is an amazing feeling!
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment of my career had to be at the end of my two year run as the MLSC Owner before I passed the company onto my coaches to keep running for the children as I started work full time after I graduated SDSU. It is so amazing to look back at where we started at one school running a soccer program with a few students coming out to play compared to now at 5 schools running soccer and basketball programs and having a full program every time!
