Meet Heather Middleton of Shadowcatcher Imagery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Middleton.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Heather. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My husband Skip and I began our journey into wedding and event photography and officially established Shadowcatcher Imagery in 2004.

In the years I call pre wedding, we were both photographers that were well known in the art communities. Then our photography was more “fine art” based. We have both shown our more artistic images in galleries throughout the San Diego and North County area and I was award with the impressive honor of two solo shows of my work at the San Diego Art Institute, and asked to curate an Art Show at the VIP Corporate Village at the Super Bowl when it was in San Diego.

When you own a camera, it seems you are always getting asked by one of your friends to shoot their wedding, for us it happened on a regular basis, and we always said no. Then one day along came Anita and John. Maybe the planets were all aligned just right that day, we talked it over and decided to go for it! “Why not, let’s try something different”. And what a door that opened and what a different world has become our daily norm. The excitement we felt that day, the adrenaline rush, the joy of everyone there experiencing that wedding that we were given the honor of documenting. Two months later I quit my job with an interior decorator and on July 4th, Independence Day, Shadowcatcher Imagery was officially born.

Has it been a smooth road?
The road to starting and running a successful business is never an easy one especially in the wedding industry. Your life becomes the business. Weekends and many holidays become work days, and family gatherings and social events have to take a back seat.

I remember years ago we were pulling up to a venue to cover a wedding and I got a phone call from a family member letting me know my Dad had passed. and I was devastated. We always say the show must go on … and it did. I put all of that emotion on hold and powered through the day capturing the moments for our couple. I will admit that about two notes into the father daughter dance my tears just really started flowing and I had to step out of the room. This is where always being two photographers really saved that part of the day for us, not a step was missed!

A huge struggle for us has been social media. Long gone are the days of the bold listing in the yellow pages to get the phone ringing with business. In today’s social media world so much time is invested into Instagram, Twitter, Snap Chat, Facebook as well as networking with other professionals in online groups. Learning to dedicate time and staff to those tasks has been a game changer.
