Meet Helen Hu of Traditional Chinese Medicine Clinic in Mission Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Helen Hu.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was raised in China and at an early age, studied Chinese Medicine. Later, I studied Western medicine at Hebei Medical School. After practicing internal medicine and cardiology for 9 years, I immigrated to the United States in 1991 and passed the United States Medical Exam in 1997. I later formally studied Chinese Medicine and graduated with a doctorate degree. I established an acupuncture and Chinese Medicine clinic in San Diego, California. This gave me the opportunity to integrate the two disciplines.

From my background of studying and practicing both western and Chinese medicine in the past 35 years, with my experience in clinical research in cancer and autoimmune diseases, I was involved in clinical trials on human subjects before I went back to practice again.

During the course of 35 years of my medical career, many questions are raised repeatedly from many of my patients, and it appears to me that there is so much misleading information out there regarding special diets for everyone, special magic pills for all, hormone therapy starting from teenage to senior even age over 80, questions of hormone therapy for maintain youth and also more in many commercialized detoxification program like mushroom.

That inspire me to write book and give lectures to educate people how to self-healing via food, plants and herbs that they all come from same source.

To let people know that healing power is within the mind and body itself and simple Chinese food therapy has been utilized as part of whole traditional Chinese Medicine for naturally healing disease and maintaining both mind and body health balance for thousands of years, the only thing we should know is how identify our body constitution and seasonal changes and different life stage for chose the right food combination to avoid the imbalance or the sub- health conditions in order to prevent diseases in the future both in short and long term.

Nurturing Life (Yang Sheng in Chinese) is a very important part of Traditional Chinese Medicine via thousand years of practice that is a new term to most parts of Western world. It teaches us to use varieties natural modalities including mind, body and Qi practice and diet to reach the optimum states of beauty and longevity.

Here are my three books to the public:
1. Body Without Mystique
2. Chinese Food Therapy Rx for Self Healing
3. Chinese Food Therapy Rx for Beauty and Longevity

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Few of entrepreneurs have an easy path to start a business, especially for a female new immigrant.

Before dreaming about going back the field as medical professionals, there was a lot to learn and struggle to survive as new immigrant from China where I was earned as little as $20 per month as a doctor in-charge in Cardiology Department of a hospital. With $100 in my pocket, I thought I was pretty rich in early 90’s not to mention that I lent money to buy the airline ticket that I had to pay back.

Learn the culture, language, and most of all was how to survive by taking underpaid job as little as $3/per hour ($7.14 as minimal wage at that time). I have to say, difficulty and struggling period is a real test for a person’s character. All my focus was to up bring my daughter with good value and high education as a single mother form working as hard as I can, focusing my goal, sacrificing any pleasures for returning my medical profession career. After passing United States Medical Licensing Exam 1997, it very hard to find the right Residency as a foreign graduate. But I decide to return school for getting my credential to practice Traditional Chinese Medicine as my young childhood passion. Lean how to start a business was very challenge after finishing school. First of all, it need some funds to start a business, I visited all the banks one can name it on the earth to lend me few thousands, but found out that I had no credit result having no credit cards ever that I thought no credit card was a good sign of without debt. However, keep positive, learning every little thing from any people I met, from how to answer phone professionally, designing business cards, contracts, operation, basic business stuff and finance. I cannot remember how much I have been through in the past 15 years, but one thing I keep in mind is that focus on my passion on integrated both medicine practice to treat the disorders of mankind while put the emphasis on prevention and caching healthy and balanced life style by most natural ways at minimal cost.

Traditional Chinese Medicine Clinic – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a comprehensive and completely medical scientific system that has developed for thousands of years It include, Acupuncture, moxibustion, Gua Sha, cupping, Tuina that work on body meridians, also it has a completely herbal pharmacology system that has classified over 6000 herbs according to TCM theory. Qi Gong, Tai Ji Quan, and its related physical exercises, and life wisdom teaching as part of whole Traditional Chinese Medicine. Yang Sheng as part of TCM is thousand years of collective wisdom for nurturing life to reach the optimum goal of longevity, beauty and happiness in mind, body and spirit.

At our Traditional Chinese Medicine Clinic, we not only practice the whole traditional Chinese Medicine. We bring the wisdom of Yang Sheng to our practice by teaching how to use Food Therapy for self-healing.

As part of promoting Yang Sheng and Beauty, I have researched and collected all beauty skin herb formula, combined with facial acupuncture and other ancient beauty skin remedies in practice in the past 15 years.

I am very proud of having published my three books for revealing all the ancient receipts of Chinese food therapy for self-healing and promoting longevity and beauty.

My clients speak for me, I don’t need to advertise, my philosophy in my practice is be honest to myself with whole heart and soul to help every client I serve as my first priority.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I believe that success cannot be defined by money only. I personally believe that success is a state of being that one believes he or she has fulfilled the objective goal, and being satisfied subjectively from the objective reach.

Because of that, I do feel satisfied when I help a client with an unsolved chronic medical condition with less financial burden and less side effects, or provide better outcome for a terminally ill. However, success is still a luxury distance realm for me, because there are still many suffering human being with diseases in the world that do not know where to find help and our medicines either TCM and Western medicine still have limitation.
