Meet Hilary Bateman of Little House of Flowers

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hilary Bateman.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Little House of Flower is new boutique flower shop that opened in September 2018; although the building itself has been at this location since the early ’80s.

My family has owned property in this neighborhood for over 50 years, and I have always been intrigued by the little house on the corner of Via Las Cumbres and Friars Road. It resembles a Victorian house with an old shake roof almost like a perfect setting for a fairy tale.

The little house has always operated as a flower shop. However, most of the previous owners would only open sporadically or a few times a year for the larger holidays. So the poor little house was shut up and empty most of the time. With a background in real estate, a passion for restoring old homes and a love of flowers; this little house and I were a perfect match.

The flower shop became available, and I jumped at the opportunity to refurbish the little house back to its original charm and provide the neighborhood with a new, convenient flower and succulent shop. Making floral and succulent arrangements has always been a hobby, but my favorite part about flowers is the joy they bring to people. I love the smiles that are brought to their faces when they buy flowers.

Little House of Flowers is more about the people than the flowers.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As a new small business…it has been an exciting challenge from day one with lots to learn. Purchasing fresh, high-quality flowers is a top priority so that would mean a few trips a week to the International Flower Market in Carlsbad at the break of dawn to avoid traffic.

Learning first hand from the growers on how to buy flowers, the quality and the origin of all the different varietals is not only overwhelming but surprising. Who knew there were 70 species of sunflowers? Another struggle was taking over a business that had no available business records. I had to start from scratch…… basically be open and see what happens.

Luckily, the neighborhood was very excited to see the little house come back to life. The support and encouragement from the neighbors and the surrounding businesses has been amazing. Little House of Flowers is slowly establishing itself as the go-to place for fresh flowers, and it’s really exciting.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Little House of Flowers story. Tell us more about the business.
Little House of Flowers specializes in fresh and colorful floral and succulent arrangements for your home, business or special event. Customers can pre-order bouquets, floral and succulent arrangements, for pick-up or delivery. We also have pre-made bouquets and floral arrangements so you can stop by and grab a quick bouquet.

Little House of Flowers also creates custom arrangements for special events, dinner parties, weddings, anniversaries, funerals, and corporate events. Wreaths, poinsettias, centerpieces, and festive succulent and floral arrangements are available for the holidays as well. Little House of Flowers is proud of being little ☺. We are all about the little details and making sure our customers are completely satisfied and ready to come back for more fresh flowers.

Most days you will find me at the flower shop with my daughter, Macy and our dog, Remy. I am proud that I have the opportunity to share this business venture with my daughter, Macy. She often works at the flower shop with me. I think it not only provides her a chance to be responsible and develop a work ethic but also sends a strong message that you should follow your dreams and take a chance.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck has played a big role in the start of this business. I consider myself very lucky for being in the right place at the right time and for meeting people that share my vision and ambition.

I think luck is about putting yourself out there and having a positive attitude. I also believe hard work invites good luck. The amount of good luck coming your way depends on your willingness to act. – Barbara Sher
