Meet Hip-Hop Weds of #HipHopWEDS in North Park/Normal Heights

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hip-Hop Weds.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Hip-Hop Weds. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
As an artist-run organization, we’ve always been involved in all aspects of the Hip-Hop business, from creating music, producing events, podcasting, graphics, marketing and more.

Hip-Hop Weds started with a monthly event called, “Hip-Hop House SD.” A sort of franchised event rooted in Phoenix, AZ and since has held official stages at festivals such as: SXSW, A3C and the Arizona Hip-Hop Fest. But what started as a monthly concert at the Air Conditioned Lounge in North Park, soon turned into a Wednesday night residency organized and curated by founder, Kahlee TreDime. The idea was to fill a void in the San Diego Hip-Hop community with different events 4-5 times a month, ultimately providing a platform for all corners of San Diego County. Every Wednesday is a different style event from the Trap, EDM, turn up vibes of “Euphoria,” the raw, boom bap, true school styles of flagship event, “Hip-Hop House SD”, the producer-driven beat exhibition, “Donuts” to what’s quickly become the hottest, Hip-Hop open mic around, “Elbow Room SD.”

Bottom line is if it’s quality Hip-Hop of any level, we have you covered.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wouldn’t say it’s been a smooth road, but the struggles we encounter aren’t too different from the road that brought us to this point. Any new working relationship, brand or business needs to build a rapport with each other and it’s a community. #HipHopWEDS had the opportunity to move into an amazing venue who had little history of live Hip-Hop and since has become the go-to spot for the Hip-Hop community to congregate mid-week. With that being said, Hip-Hop and Rap music still hold a negative stigma in the mind of many less experienced in the culture. When you’re a young team of outsiders, it often times takes more to prove yourself. Fortunately, our team keeps quality, respect, and professionalism at the forefront of all business moves, which cannot be ignored by any serious businessman or woman.

#HipHopWEDS – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
#HipHopWEDS is an event production company run by a collective of friends and creatives with overlapping life and business goals, which seems to keep our bigger pictures in line with each other. We produce, promote and host Hip-Hop events throughout San Diego any night of the week, but can always be experienced Wed nights at the AC Lounge on 30th and Adams.

The initial goal was to hold quality events providing a space for artists of all skill and experience levels to perform. Where dope veteran emcees are known to convene and up & coming artists are broke and discovered. #HipHopWEDS is also like a gym where we exercise our rhymes and strengthen our performance chops. Where fans and patrons can witness new material being created, skills sharpened and once in a lifetime moments take place much like the world famous Comedy Store in Hollywood. We’re also a community who helps each other through the performance process in a similar vein as the legendary Project Blowed in Los Angeles. So, if you’re holding the mic wrong, we’re gonna pull you aside and show you the right way to hold it and if you’re rapping over your vocals, we’re gonna take those training wheels off. Being that many of us didn’t have mentors per se, we’ve basically become that to each other building bridges to knowledge, opportunities, and success.

Many of the #HipHopWEDS residents and staff are also members of the San Diego based, Hip-Hop crew, @TheFreshState as well as some part of the Blog/Podcast Network, PlatformCollection.com. That alone keeps our tight-knit squad on the same page with each other while a whole different book from others. We’re blessed to sit at the table with pillars of the Hip-Hop community in and outside of our city, but are now finding success at the table and chairs we build for ourselves enjoying the ever-evolving menu of Hip-Hop Weds.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
#HipHopWEDS is still a young, growing entity within our community, but we’ve made great strides in our last couple years of business. We’ve hosted and produced stages at Graffiti Festivals, “Battlegroundz” and “Kingz of Style” as well as hosted events with notable artists from Blame One, Odessa Kane & 18Scales to Vel the Wonder, Crimeapple and Benny the Butcher. We’ve also grown a strong community of Hip-Hop Heads at our home base, the AC Lounge, by consistently tweaking our recipe in an attempt to create the perfect combination for artists and patrons alike. Being artists ourselves a major goal has always been to do it the way we’d like it done for us. In a time where many only know politics, pay to play and rapping over vocals, we choose a different route by focusing on building the community we’d want to be a part of. So far, we’re proud of our progress towards creating a reliable source of good music, good entertainment and good vibes to the point where others commission our staff to book, host and produce their events.
