Meet Laura Cain of iHeartMedia, Total Traffic and Weather Network in Serra Mesa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Cain.

Laura, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
When I was a senior at San Diego State in 1991, I got an internship at KFMB AM writing the news. It eventually turned into a 25 year-long job as a co-host on the Jeff and Jer Showgram. We bounced around a few stations and ended our run at 96.5 FM in June of 2017. The Jeff and Jer Showgram was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in Chicago in 2016.

During the years on the air, I shared my life with our listeners from the birth of both of my children to the death of my father to marriage and divorce, We have shared it all, Perhaps the most important thing I shared with our listeners was my sobriety. I went into rehab on March 7, 2007, and I have been sober ever since. I’ve been public about my sobriety because I believe that if someone like me, a wife and mother of two kids, was suffering from alcohol and substance abuse, so were others.

I currently do traffic reports in the afternoon on various stations throughout the city, I also have a couple of on-air weekend shifts on Star 94.1 FM. I write an online blog that I call “Laura’s Diary” and I have a podcast on IHeartRadio called Laura Cain After Dark.

I love radio and I always will.

I’ve been a single mom for 12 and a half years. I have a 19-year-old son who is a sophomore at The University of Oregon and I have a 15-year-old daughter named Evan Elisabeth who is in her sophomore year of high school. They are my two favorite people on the entire planet!

Has it been a smooth road?
The road has not been smooth as far as the radio business goes. We (the Jeff and Jer Showgram) have been laid off twice in our 25 years. It went down the same way both times: we were called into the HR Department after our morning was over and was told that it was our last day on the air. Radio can be brutal like that.

And, it was a struggle for me in the years leading up to my sobriety trying to keep my demons a secret from my co-workers and listeners.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with iHeartMedia, Total Traffic and Weather Network, – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
iHeartMedia houses seven radio stations under one roof here in San Diego. The GM is the heart of iHeartMedia here. She runs this company with gratitude and grace. So many talented people are in this building. iHeartRadio is also part of the iHeartMedia powerhouse. That’s where you can find my podcast Laura Cain After Dark, along with thousands of others.

Total Traffic and Weather Network is based in Long Beach and provides traffic and weather reports for cities all over the United States as well as here in San Diego.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the people in San Diego. I remember when I came down here from Los Angeles when I was 18 and thinking how nice everyone was! I love the diversity here and that our city embraces it. I love the weather, the sunsets, downtown, Fashion Valley, my neighborhood (Mission Hills/Hillcrest) and my job.

I dislike a lot of the freeways interchanges and offramps. Someone designed them poorly because they are a challenge to navigate and there are accidents every day in the same areas!
