Meet Irina Madan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Irina Madan.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I am an artist and fashion designer born in Moldova – the landlocked country between Romania and Ukraine. Becoming a fashion designer was always my dream. I was very lucky to be accepted as a student at Fine Arts Academy from Chisinau, Moldova. That helped me to develop my art skills and to turn my childhood dreams become true. It was by far an amazing life experience.

I created my first hand-painted collection in my senior year. Unfortunately, I was not able to find colorful fabrics with Venetian motifs. So my creations started with painting white canvas with waterproof paint. I got my bachelor degree in 2013 in fashion design. I was extremely lucky to participate in fashion events, showcasing my first collection a few months later. That helped me a lot to get orders from all over the world. Many of my dreams came true during all these years.
I consider my Creations – Wearable Paintings. My art is extremely valuable to me as it represents myself. It is a part of me and who I am. I put all my heart into my creations. My main goal is to be authentic and share my own story. I just keep enjoying painting my emotions and feelings on attires as it is my greatest passion of all.

Please tell us about your art.
My designs represent timeless and seasonless wearable art. Each created attire has a purpose of hosting one of my paintings. Each piece is individually painted and signed by myself. As the power of colors is enormous, I just love to create beautiful designs to make peoples lives more colorful. My vision of painting is different and unique as I see a painting as a piece of art that can be worn. I continuously merge fashion with art painting with traditions and as a result creating unique attires. I sincerely believe that the line between fashion and art is so fine that most of the times they just blend. I find beauty everywhere: The beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I am very passionate and dedicated to my job. I find inspiration everywhere: in nature, my inner feelings, experiences, music, books. It is vital for me to travel the world so I can constantly be inspired by new places. San Diego is a unique and amazing city and as a result, inspires me to create. It is one of my favorite cities, and the love it offers can be related to my art. My new collection was inspired by my favorite poem “Young lioness, love” by Nichita Stanescu. I also paint various traditional themes representing my culture. I love to value my roots and expose them into my creations. So to be truly inspired, I have learned to trust my instincts and intuition. Each attire is concepted on white cotton canvas, and they are all hand painted with special waterproof colors. Some of my creations are completely covered by my paintings. The fabric I use is always manually sewed. As all my creations are handmade from start to end, it does require an enormous amount of work and inspiration.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
I believe the biggest challenge artists are facing, and that’s valid not only for today, is the financial aspect. In order to be able to promote a brand/product, big investments are required. Unfortunately, not everyone has these resources and lots of the times great pieces of art are sold way under their true value. This lack of financial resources can lead to artists inability to create in future.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
People can see my work on my Etsy shop: My goal is to open an international fashion atelier, so I can share all my passions and feelings around the world. Ultimately I would like to become a couturier, so I can mainly focus on creating new and unique designs and build a talented team that will assist me with the production itself. In the long run, I see my creations at a larger scale production by an entrusted high-quality printing technology.
