Today we’d like to introduce you to Ivymay.
Ivymay, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
We had watched every single Netflix movie, read every book, finished every puzzle in our apartment by May of 2020, thanks to Covid. We were getting incredibly uncomfortable not being able to go out and do the things we normally would do. Cody has always been an entrepreneur so every day, he would pitch a business idea to Tammy. None of them really stuck so he asked Tammy to think of one. She answered – “a plant shop might be cool one day.” But the time was now. We noticed that many had turned to plants as a form of therapy to learn something new during the pandemic. Watching plants grow also gave many hope. We wanted to start a business to help give easy access to plants during the stay-at-home orders by providing free contactless delivery in San Diego.
Has it been a smooth road?
We’ve encountered many, many challenges running a plant business. Since plants are a living product, we must keep them alive and thriving. The plant market is also insane. You wouldn’t think that off the bat but being a new small business without a lot of buying power, we were unable to order the plant selection we wanted. That forced us to visit plant retailers and try to bargain prices if we bought five or more for our inventory. We’ve also faced some technology restrictions being a delivery only company – PayPal would hold our funds since we weren’t able to provide a tracking number without shipping products. And of course, the delivery portion takes up quite a bit of time with one of us driving all day to do the deliveries, but seeing how happy our customers are to receive a plant to their doorstep that isn’t damaged has been the fuel that keeps us going.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Cody runs all the operational parts of the business and leads much of the business strategy. From partnerships, to what we should do next in the most cost-effective way possible is the name of his game. He also does much of the buying for the inventory and does all the deliveries.
Tammy owns much of the marketing, especially online. She has worked in social media & content marketing for 8+ years for large corporations and knows the ins-and-outs of online content creation. Customer service and online partnerships is also her area of focus.
IvyMay offers ease of obtaining houseplants in San Diego. Each plant is hand-selected for our inventory, pruned, organically fertilized, checked for pests & root rot, hand-packaged and delivered to your door for free. All our tips & tricks can be found online via our website or social media profiles to guide you through plant parenthood.
We’re most proud of the work we’ve accomplished working on this business part-time for two months. Tammy still works full-time, and Cody still has a side hustle of teaching boxing. We’re totally exhausted, but it’s been so worth it from the sweetest & nicest messages we receive from happy, satisfied customers!
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Our city is perfect! San Diegans LOVE houseplants – we’ve noticed that plants are now being treated like pets! Delivery & inventory space are the biggest challenges we’ve faced so far. It’s a space that no one in San Diego has really tried before & we can see why. The barrier to entry is high. It’s challenging for sure and a big-time commitment to jumpstart a delivery service of live houseplants. Everyone has been extremely supportive of our new small business. We’re so appreciative of this city.
We also enjoy partnering with other small local businesses & creating relationships. Our photographer, Lindsey White of @wearepb is someone we met through this business and introduced us to SD Voyager. It’s amazing to see the community root for you and continue to help your business succeed.
