Meet Izaac Villalobos of Fallbrook Winery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Izaac Villalobos.

Izaac, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Born and raised in San Diego, grew up in Escondido. Went to Cal State San Marcos where I studied Business.

One summer, during college, I was offered an opportunity to work at Fallbrook Winery… I was told I could help at the winery and in the tasting room. I showed up to work on Monday morning at 6 am (a little early for the tasting room to be open, I thought to myself) and I quickly learned that what they really needed was help in the vineyards. It was June, it was hot and I had never worked harder a day in my life. My future boss thought he had seen the last of me but I came back on Tuesday and never looked back.

After graduating, I was offered the position of Assistant General Manager and primarily facilitated the fulfillment and general vineyard operations. Since then, I have become General Manager and oversee our vineyard, production and sales operations. Most recently, I have become president of the San Diego County Vintners Association.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There has definitely been a lot of learning opportunities. I went straight from college to management in the wine industry. There was a lot that I did not know but I am always willing to learn and take on a challenge.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Fallbrook Winery – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Fallbrook Winery has been family owned and operated since 1995. We are one of San Diego’s biggest wineries and specialize in Bordeaux varietals. Our estate is 36 acres but manage and operate a total of 26 vineyards of 160 acres in San Diego County. We have two brands; our Fallbrook brand is a blend of local fruit and fruit from other parts of the state. Our Fallbrook wines are available at many local retailers and restaurant by the glass.

Our Estate or 33°N brands is 100% of our estate grapes. Estate wines are available at select retailers, restaurants and the winery. Our flagship wine is our Bordeaux style blend that we call BDX. One thing that really sets us apart is our deep desire to bring recognition to San Diego County as a respected wine growing region. We do this by ensuring top quality fruit from our local vineyards and partners.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Our long-term goal is to source enough fruit from San Diego that we can produce 100% of our wines from grapes grown in the area. One way we are trying to do this is by becoming more involved in the local wine community.
