Today we’d like to introduce you to J. Ann Clayton.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Life is Beautiful! But some days we don’t always see that beauty.
I began my journey in wanting to help people at a pretty young age. I always found that people appreciated my listening ears and words of advice when they were going through difficult times.
Processing feelings and emotions is the greatest therapy anyone can offer. I grew up in Southern California and went to college on the east coast. I developed a sense of curiosity to learn more about various cultures, backgrounds, and diversity. I traveled to Costa Rica and learned Spanish to connect with Spanish Speaking individuals as well. I always knew I wanted to do some form of therapy, while exploring many different avenues
When looking into Graduate studies, I came upon a Masters in Social Work (MSW); with various pathways in health, community, mental health as well as non-profit organizations. I decided to pursue my MSW at the University of Southern California and focused on Health. I personally saw the effects of terminal illness within my family dynamics and wanted to dive a little deeper on how I could help and connect with this population.
My background includes working with terminally ill children and families at a Trauma I Children’s Hospital and developing therapeutic skills to assist them during grieving and life transitions. Later in my career, I expanded my therapeutic skills within the Mental Health scope while working with California convicted offenders and now starting my private practice and currently accepting clients seeking psychotherapy services.
Life is hard and comes with different, unexpected change. Allow me to support you through this journey and assist you in increasing a healthy mind and soul.
Has it been a smooth road?
Staying balanced is key. With the many hats I wear at times; I sometimes forget the importance of self-care. When we take care of ourselves both mentally and physically, we are able to provide a genuine connection with others and have the ability to assist/help others when needed.
Since my private practice is only part-time, in the beginning, I did find it difficult to manage my focus in different places. This may be supported by the many goals I have for myself within my practice.
However, taking this time to learn from every challenge and growing from them is important. Every challenge is a lesson and learning from each one is essential when starting a business/practice. I feel strongly about my career and very passionate about providing therapy.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
My goal is to assist individuals (adults, children/adolescents and couples) in becoming connected with their inner self again while addressing some challenges through psychotherapy (therapy services). I find it important to regain resilience and work toward a new healthy well-being. I look forward to providing a safe haven for you to open up and express your thoughts and feelings.
My therapeutic approaches will stem from Mindfulness Techniques, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, EMDR, and Trauma-Focused Therapy as well. I specialize in working with individuals who are currently dealing with grief and loss, traumatic experiences, anxiety, and depression.
With my diverse background, I’d like to think that my connection with a variety of people is what would set me apart from others.
I am proud to be listening to my calling and helping others with Life’s challenges. I also provide supervision hours to ASW clinicians seeking supervision.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Eventually, I’d like to be working full-time private practice.
