Meet Jade Blanco of Blanco Blanco Hair Design in Shelter Island

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jade Blanco.

Jade, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I grew up in Billings Montana, in a family of Hairdressers, my parents both did hair and own several succesful hair salons and a cosmetology school. When I was a little kid I saw what my dad did and just knew I wanted to do hair. I left home and traveled around a bit and landed in Seattle, where I went to the Aveda Institute on capitol Hill, but the day after I got my license I moved to San Diego seeking sun and surf. I found my way to ocean beach where I worked for almost 7 years. During that time I met my fiancé peighton Johnson, in October of 2015 we opened Blanco Blanco.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a pretty smooth road. We have our struggles, ups and downs, but going into this I knew what to do, its in my blood, and I am lucky to have two great parents to help guide and mentor me. Peighton and I make a good team, having her is a huge, can’t imagine doing it alone. Our biggest struggle I guess has been finding the right people to hire. We really believe in our way of doing things and every hairdresser comes from a different salon culture. We have held off on adding team members and had to let some go because it just wasn’t the right fit. We have a certain vibe we are going for and the salon is our sanctuary. We have to protect that.

Blanco Blanco Hair Design – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Blanco Blanco is a boutique salon, we specialize in advanced cut and color techniques for men and women. We are known for our balayage (free hand highlighting technique), color services, and precision cuts. I guess we are most proud of client retention. Our clients become family after a while, we focus on a comfortable, relaxing, aesthetically pleasing environment, When a guest is in the chair we want them to be at ease, and enjoy the experience.

I’m also proud of the passion we have for hair, we really love doing it and I think it shows in our work. What sets us apart is, this is what we love to do, this isn’t a job. it’s an obsession. We are a young and hip salon but when grandma comes in she feels like she belongs. Something else that separates us from the pack is our people, our clients. They really make the salon what it is, and they are amazing. It’s an honor to have so many beautiful people continue to support us as they do. Like I said, they are family.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment was cutting that first cut in my new salon. It was a huge mile marker in my life. Blanco Blanco is a childhood dream. I am very proud of what we have accomplished but I tend to dream pretty big, so this is just the beginning, we have a lot more work to do.
