Meet Jake Holmes of Pilates of La Jolla

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jake Holmes.

Jake, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Pilates of La Jolla began over 23 years ago in La Jolla, California. With one Reformer and a 10×12′ room Moji Austell and I set out to succeed in the fitness industry. Our goal? To deliver to people what they want and need in fitness. Over the years we have been a La Jolla mainstay. Our clientele has included stars of stage and screen, professional and Olympic athletes, and regular people who simply want to look and feel their best. We’ve served thousands.

In a world of shouting drill instructors, flashy gyms and kooky yogis, PLJ has developed an approach and method that serves its’ clients safely and consistently. Our studios are fun, friendly, and casual. Our focus is always on delivering value to our clients. We learned early that trends come and go, but quality fitness training is always in demand. As proof, Moji and I still have our first clients – yes, clients for 23 years. One of the things that has kept us going all these years is that we never stop learning. We are constantly updating our skills and methods.

Our trainers are the best in the country, we train them ourselves and many have gone on to open their own studios in places like South Carolina, Oregon, Colorado and even Kobe, Japan.

For the future we have a surprise or two I can’t discuss now but stay tuned.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
We’ve been blessed for sure. I mean, how many people get to play for a living? It’s never been easy. The competition has been fierce. At one point there were 28 different fitness companies in 92037. Some have been quality players and others not so much. We’ve had trainers of ours open a block down the road and even next door. Rather than freaking out or getting involved in the gossip mill of La Jolla we simply did our best to do our best and that’s always been enough.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Pilates of La Jolla story. Tell us more about the business.
We offer personal training and small group classes in the Pilates Method. We don’t restrict ourselves to the traditional ways. We are constantly learning and updating our methods. Rarely does a season go by where we don’t run into a new customer who has special needs that we need to adapt to. In addition to attracting a number of millennials we have recently been getting a number of seniors who want to stay relevant and active in their work, social and family lives. I personally have clients in their teens up to 86. Paying attention to each one and their individual needs is what keeps us relevant in this industry.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Good luck/bad luck are all the same. Without exception, every time I thought something was super bad and the end of the world it always turned out for the best.
