Meet Jake Twomey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jake Twomey.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up in the South Coast of Massachusetts. I always dreamed of living in a beautiful city and couldn’t think of any place better than San Diego.

I moved here in 2014, at the age of 24. I lived frugally and worked in a restaurant to earn some income while I figured out exactly what I wanted to do.

In 2015, when Snapchat started getting popular, I realized that my friends would talk about my snaps between each other, and I started to grow a modest following. I was good at using Snapchat to tell stories.

That’s when I figured it out – It was time to start a Marketing business.

My plan was to use Social Media to tell stories for brands because I knew that storytelling is the most powerful form of Marketing and Advertising.

I started training my Marketing skills.

Before my bar shifts, I would binge-watch how-to-videos on Youtube. Mainly just figuring out how to use the popular platforms; Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook and Musical.ly (now called Tik Tok), etc.

I knew if I could master these platforms, then I would be able to use my skills to market businesses.

I took courses in copywriting. I journaled and created plans for my success. I sought out mentors who had successfully started their own businesses.

I was a sponge.

I offered to manage the Social Media accounts for the bar I was working at, Crushed, in Pacific Beach. I started to build a following for Crushed. I did this for two years completely on the side, while my income was coming from working the bar.

After a few years, I started to collaborate and create viral videos. 30,000 views. 100,000 views. 600,000 views. 1.5 million views on World Star Hip Hop. Five million views on Insider Foods.

Crushed instantly felt the impact of this exposure. They began generously compensating me for my Marketing and Advertising skills. I was able to cut back on bar shifts and focus on Marketing.

Other local businesses started to notice and hired me for my services. I was able to create the income streams to completely leave my bar job.

My Marketing business was born.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I learned the hard way that you cannot market a poor product and brand. It will eventually fail.

When businesses would reach out to me to do their marketing, I’d gladly accept the challenge (and the income). And in some cases, I would fail. I got fired from multiple businesses.

For a time, I was unsure why some of my marketing wasn’t effective. I blamed it on my skills.

Ultimately, I realized it wasn’t me that was the problem, it was some of the businesses that I was marketing. These businesses had a poor product, service and ownership.

These businesses no longer exist.

Crushed was the perfect business for me to get started with. Their ownership is top-notch and they’ve created a strong brand and put out a quality product. Crushed will continue to thrive with or without me.

I compare my skills to an Amplifier. And the business to the Musician. You can have the best quality Amplifier in the world, but if the Musician doesn’t make good music, people are going to be annoyed. And it’s going to fail.

Now I’m very careful with the businesses I choose to work with. They need to be owned by savvy and honest business owners, have a good product, and a tasteful brand. If so, I can amplify their brand and the business will grow.

What else should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
