Meet James Greene of I Am James: Who Are You Podcast

Today we’d like to introduce you to James Greene.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
It started two years ago when I had a conversation with my best friend whose name also happens to be James. He asked if I could do one thing that I loved and didn’t have to worry about money, what would it be? My answer was that “I just wanted to talk to people all day”. Of course, at the time, I did not realize it would lead me to starting a podcast. Because I could not shake him asking me this question, I found myself thinking about this at least 6xs a day over the next year. Shortly after our conversation, I was talking to another friend about my conversation with James and she said have you ever heard of podcast. At that time I heard of podcast but me starting one was not anything I had considered. After this conversation, I went to my iPhone and began to subscribe to podcast like The Mentee, Grant Cardone, San Deigo host Sean Croxton’s Quote of the day, Joel Osteen, TD Jakes and some real estate/WSJ podcasts. Over the next six months, I filled my days with listening to these podcasts and took notes on how they were structured, their topics and brainstorming what my podcast would look like. I then went to YouTube and started listening to Jim Rohn, Dr. ET, Less Brown, Earl, and Tony Robbins. I loved these guys because they were people who got paid to talk to others. I also researched podcasting equipment and purchased each piece of equipment over the next four months. Finally, in August of 2018, I launched the I AM James: Who are you podcast.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. After my research and purchasing the equipment, I realized that I had to talk to the world. First, my insecurities of my Southern Drawl came out, then all the other negative thoughts as well as others who thought I was crazy for wanting to talk to people all day. I started some mindset work and it helped me through this rough patch and that is actually why the focus of the podcast is about changing mindset. I guess you can say my struggle during this journey helped define my purpose. After starting, I was able to line up a couple of people to interview but eventually, I had no one else. This brought back those negative thoughts. I navigated through those thoughts and did some more mindset work. I quickly realized that I could host my own shows when I didn’t have interviews lined up. This allowed me to connect with the audience and still talk to people.

Please tell us about your podcast.
The I AM James: Who are you? podcast really prides itself on connecting real people with real stories of others who have faced and overcame challenges in their lives. This has helped several people believe and has changed their lives. One of the most proudest moments was when I received a text message from someone I admire and they said wow this episode really touched me and I referred several others to listen to your podcast. I was like WOW I may be on to something. Originally I started this just to talk to people and give others something to believe in through changing their thoughts process. I did not realize I would actually connect with this many people. I think what sets me apart from other podcast is that each and every person I interview is about them. I have no hidden agenda or a scripted questionnaire, it is only to promote the guest and their story so it can reach who it needs to. The purpose is for each interview to flow like a conversation, not a Q and A session. I do not spend time promoting myself. I love that I get to enjoy talking to people which is the goal.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I actually have two.

One of my favorite childhood memory is when my father and I built me and my friends a clubhouse and let us stay the night in it after it was completed.

The other is sitting in the living room with my mom and dad in a triangle teaching my sister how to walk. We would stand her on her feet and each of us took turns calling her name as she attempted to come to us.
