Meet James McIlvenna, Tristan Lochman and Jacob Weber of T5 Travel

Today we’d like to introduce you to James McIlvenna, Tristan Lochman and Jacob Weber.

Hi James, Tristan and Jacob, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
T5 was born from a desire to find a single source of information that was relevant; real recommendations, relatable reviews, and knowledge that you could navigate without being overwhelmed by flash sales and inflated numbers. Between us, we have visited over 100 countries, and spent hours searching and searching without a source for the answers we were seeking. We’ve had great experiences at places with bad reviews, and likewise left disappointed by places that were “supposed” to be great. T5 is a passion project in the purest sense, because we’re creating this for ourselves, and any other like-minded explorers; a reference point for real experiences.

Visiting and exploring new places (and old favourites) should only ever be a positive experience, and we’ve found too much negativity in other resources. We want T5 to be carefree and inspiring — just like any good trip should be. A sanctuary from the cynical.

We also want to create a platform to curate, collate and celebrate all of the amazing content out there being published by passionate people. Hometown heroes, local legends, the well-travelled, well-read and well-informed. We only want to hear about the best — that’s why our rule is Top 5, no more, no less. We want to bring the sense of discovery back to modern times, with a mobile-first approach to streamline your on-the-go experience.

Sustainability and sensibility are two of our core values and practices; we will always recommend ethical and responsible travel. Our community is united by their love for travel and we understand the urgency to preserve this for many generations to come. Travel shouldn’t cost the earth — literally or metaphorically. Just because an independent business doesn’t have a multi-million pound marketing budget, doesn’t mean it should be any less in the spotlight. We want to uncover those hidden gems, from the off the beaten track tavernas to the local authentic experiences that you may not always hear about.

Travel is pretty limited right now — but we will travel again, freely and responsibly

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting during the pandemic was the biggest challenge and attempting to keep the positivity around travel when the world was closed off. We also have staff based across 3 continents so ensuring everyone was in the loop and working on the same page was another key focus for us but we have adapted successfully to the virtual world and look forward to meeting up in person for our AGM.

T5 was born from a desire to find a single source of information that was relevant featuring real recommendations, relatable reviews, and knowledge that you could navigate without being overwhelmed by flash sales and inflated numbers. Our business is focused on providing local expertise in a streamlined manner to change the way the travel community accesses information and provide businesses with an innovative way to showcase their offering to reach their desired audience. Lists and travel are in our DNA – from the early days of one of our Founders making lists of things to do and places to visit in the back of his parents car to our own personal experiences of travelling together and googling “best things to do” whilst visiting certain locations but not receiving the information that we needed. Our goal is to create a platform and provide a forum for impartial advice from the thousands of destination experts out there who may have a small blog as a passion project to those with a thriving social media following.

Our focus is to fill the gap in the market for a mobile first approach to travel planning – whether you be in the location or about to visit, the features on our unique app, website and social media will ensure that travellers worldwide can optimize their experiences.

Travel is where our experience and initial focus lies but we believe that with success in this industry, the concept of T5 can be transferred to other industries.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Our key focus is to build our platform and business around the following core philosophies.

– To provide the traveller with a streamlined route to EAT (expert, authentic, trustworthy) advice
– To champion sustainability and purpose when travelling
– To engage our users and partners with unique features
– To change the way we travel
